Chapter 14
Reporting the Achievement
Translator : PolterGlast
While we were chatting
happily, Ginia clapped her hands together as if she'd suddenly had an idea.
"Oh, right,
Graham-san. Why don't we try eating a Great Lemon while we wait for the body
search? We were so engrossed in fighting on the way here that I forgot to
eat!"
"I am getting
hungry, and eating while we wait sounds like a good idea. We picked twenty, so
we can each have about three. Let's eat."
I took two Great
Lemons out of my bag and handed one to Ginia.
They were quite large
for a fruit, about half the size of Ginia's face.
"Do you just bite
right into this?"
"I think you
could, but it's tastier if you peel it. You peel the outer skin, then the inner
skin, and eat the flesh inside. --Mmm, it's sweet, sour, and delicious!"
I copied Ginia and
peeled it, then bit into the flesh of the Great Lemon.
Whoa! It had a
wonderful aroma that went right through my nose, and while it was sour, it also
had a strong sweetness that was delicious.
This would certainly
be a great ingredient for sweets.
"This is
delicious. It's perfectly tasty even on its own."
"Right! They were
easy to pick near the town where my family lives, so I ate them a lot when I
was little. It's making me crave my mother's cake."
"She made cakes
with Great Lemons?"
"Yes. It's called
a pound cake, a moist cake, but it's really delicious! If we ever get a chance
to go to my hometown, you have to try it, Graham-san."
"I'd love to. I'm
looking forward to it already."
As we were eating our
Great Lemons and talking, our turn for the body search came in no time.
Having acquired our
adventurer cards, we passed the body search easily and headed straight for the
Adventurer's Guild.
It was past evening,
and the area in front of the Adventurer's Guild was overflowing with people.
It was empty in the
morning so we could go straight to the reception, but at this time of day, it
looks like we'll have to wait in line.
"There are so
many people. I don't like crowds, but it's nice not to be made fun of."
"If they spot me,
I'll be mocked. I'm causing you trouble, Ginia."
"The ones who
make fun of you are the ones in the wrong! Like I said before, you should just
beat them up, Graham-san!"
"I'm not going to
resort to violence just for being mocked. More importantly, let's get in line
to turn in our delivery."
I thought that
reporting a completed quest would be done at the same reception desk where we
accepted it, but there was a separate place just for deliveries. We handed over
ten Great Lemons there and it was over in a flash.
We couldn't give a
Great Lemon to the receptionist, and although we completed the quest, it was so
brief that it felt unfulfilling.
It was nice not to
have to wait in a long line, but Ginia and I went outside with a somewhat
indescribable feeling.
"That was pretty
anticlimactic for our first completion."
"I just assumed
we'd at least get a 'congratulations' or something."
"Me too. ...Maybe
we should have lined up at the morning receptionist's counter?"
"No, that would
have definitely been a bother. For now, let's just the two of us be happy about
it."
"You're right!
Well then, to celebrate our first completed quest, why don't we have a
celebratory dinner?"
"Ooh, I'd love
to—is what I'd like to say, but I really have no money."
The pay for the Great
Lemon quest was two silver coins.
That meant one silver
coin for each of us, so I had absolutely no leeway for a celebratory dinner.
I can't stay at the
tavern like yesterday, and even the cheapest inn will probably cost at least
five copper coins.
That would leave me
with only five copper coins, meaning I'd be scraping by even for a normal meal.
"Oh, right, you
didn't have any money, so you stayed at the tavern yesterday. In that case, how
about it's my treat today? Since I don't have to pay for the vase, I have a
little extra money!"
"No, I really
think you should use it on yourself. ...Also, it just hurts my pride to be
treated by a woman who's almost two decades younger than me."
"Mmm. But I
wanted to have a celebratory dinner with you, Graham-san..."
"Let's definitely
do it once we save up some money from doing quests. You've gained some
confidence in defeating monsters, and if we take on slightly more difficult
quests, we should be able to save up."
"That's true.
It's a shame, but for now, let's live within our means. It's not like I have
money to spare, either."
"Yeah, I think
that's for the best."
It was unfortunate,
but we decided against a celebratory dinner for our first completed quest.
We now know that we
can easily handle the lowest-ranking quests, so starting tomorrow, I want to
power through quests and quickly move up from being a rookie adventurer.
But I won't let my
guard down; I'll stay on my toes to make sure Ginia is never put in any danger.
"Well then, shall
we part ways here? Where should we meet tomorrow?"
"I'll come pick
you up at the tavern in the morning. I still haven't decided where I'm staying
yet."
"Okay. I'll be
waiting! Also... if you can't find an inn, please don't hesitate to come to the
tavern. I'll convince the manager for you."
"Thank you. If I
really can't find anything, I'll take you up on that."
"Yes! Thank you
so much for everything today. I'm looking forward to working with you again
tomorrow."
"Likewise, I'm
looking forward to tomorrow."
And so, I parted ways
with Ginia and began my search for an inn.
The sun had already
set, and if I didn't find one soon, I'd have to rely on Ginia's help.
Having just turned
down a dinner offer because I didn't want a woman two decades my junior to
treat me, I wanted to avoid a situation where I ended up needing her help
anyway. I had to find a cheap inn with a vacant room, no matter what.
