Chapter 15
A Strange Quietness
Translator : PolterGlast
The next day.
Yesterday, I managed
to find an inn where I could stay for six copper coins and spent the night
there.
It was a small, square
room with a single, stiff futon, but it was far more comfortable than sleeping outdoors.
To be honest, the sofa
at the tavern was more comfortable, but I can't keep relying on Ginia's
kindness, so I'll have to make do with this cheap inn until I save up some
money.
I did my daily
training before the sun was fully up and rinsed myself off in the shared
shower.
Of course, there was
no hot water, so I finished getting ready while shivering.
The Great Lemon
gathering was a breeze, so I'd like to complete about two quests today.
One silver coin is
just too little, and I want to earn some money so I can have that celebratory
dinner I promised Ginia.
Psyching myself up, I
headed to the tavern to meet Ginia.
I arrived earlier than
the scheduled time, but Ginia was already waiting outside the shop.
She might have been
waiting early out of consideration for me.
"Did I keep you
waiting? Sorry I'm late."
"Not at all! My
body was itching to go, so I just came out early on my own. Don't worry about
it!"
"Your body was
itching? As in, you couldn't wait to get into a fight?"
"Exactly! Even
when I closed my eyes to sleep, I kept replaying yesterday's battle with the
monsters in my head!"
"That's pretty
intense. I don't know if that's a good trend, but I'm glad you're looking
forward to taking on quests."
"I want to go
right away! I'm counting on you again today, Graham-san."
"Yeah,
likewise."
When she says that, it
gets me motivated too.
Ginia is eager, so I'd
really like to take on a subjugation quest today.
We'll have to choose
an easy monster to defeat, but I can leave that to our usual receptionist
without any problem.
After meeting up, we
immediately headed to the Adventurer's Guild.
"...Aren't there
fewer people than yesterday?"
"You're right,
there are fewer. There weren't many people at this time yesterday either, but
today you can count them on one hand."
"I wonder if it's
just because it's early morning?"
"We'll probably
find out if we ask. For now, let's go to our usual receptionist."
As Ginia said, there
were surprisingly few people around the Adventurer's Guild compared to
yesterday.
I'm grateful that no
one is pointing at me, but when it's this empty, it makes me a little anxious.
We entered the
Adventurer's Guild, and the inside was also sparse with people, so we were able
to get service right away without waiting in line.
"Welcome. It
seems you completed yesterday's quest! When I heard the report from my
colleague, I couldn't help but do a victory pose!"
While I was wondering
about the lack of people, the receptionist greeted us as cheerfully as ever.
She was happy about us
completing the quest as if it were her own accomplishment, and that, combined
with her beaming smile, warmed my heart.
"Thank you. You
picked a good quest for us, so we were able to complete it without any trouble.
Also... this is a Great Lemon we picked yesterday. If you'd like, please eat it
later."
"It was sweet and
delicious, so please try it!"
"What? For me?
Thank you! I'll be sure to savor it!"
When I handed her the
Great Lemon I couldn't give her yesterday, her smile grew even wider with joy.
I was a little worried
it might be an unwelcome gesture, but I'm glad I gave it to her.
"So, are you
taking on another quest today? If so, I can pick one out for you!"
"Yeah, I'd
appreciate that. I was thinking of taking a subjugation quest today, but what
do you think?"
"Did you engage
in any combat with monsters yesterday?"
"They were all
weak monsters like common goblins, but we were able to defeat them without
difficulty."
"I see! In that
case, I think you'll be fine taking on a subjugation quest!"
"Then I'd like a
subjugation quest today. If possible, I'd like to take two, or one that pays as
much as two. Are there any good ones?"
"Please wait a
moment. I'll go look!"
The receptionist
disappeared into the back to search for a quest that met my request.
While Ginia and I
waited and talked, she returned from the back room shortly after.
"Thank you for
waiting. This is the recommended subjugation quest."
Looking at the paper
she brought, one was for the subjugation of a single Sword Hawk.
The other was for the
subjugation of an Orc.
I had never heard of a
Sword Hawk, but I had fought Orcs many times.
Like goblins, they had
various types, and a horde led by an Orc Emperor had power comparable to a
contingent of the Demon Lord's army.
"Is this for the
subjugation of a common Orc?"
"Yes, of
course!"
If it's a common Orc,
I can defeat it just like a goblin.
However... Orcs
usually live in groups, and in my experience, common Orcs almost never act
alone.
In that case, even
though I have no knowledge of it, would it be safer to take the Sword Hawk
subjugation quest?
"By the way, I
recommend the Orc subjugation. Sword Hawks are flying monsters, so they're a
bit tricky to defeat."
"I'd like to say
Orc—but this time, I'll take the Sword Hawk quest."
"Understood! Both
of these are monsters that even rookies can defeat if they try hard, so I think
you'll be fine! The reward for the Sword Hawk subjugation is five silver coins,
which is more than double the amount of yesterday's quest."
"Thank you for
finding a good quest for us."
"Not at all. This
might sound like a catch for the high reward, but you'll have to deliver the
entire defeated Sword Hawk. Is that alright?"
I don't know what a
Sword Hawk looks like, but since Ginia is giving a thumbs-up, I should be able to
rely on her again this time.
The fact that they
want the carcass probably means it's a monster used for food.
