Chapter 29
The Promotion Exam
Translator : PolterGlast
We entered the
Adventurer's Guild and immediately went to our usual receptionist.
Perhaps because
they've gotten used to us, there's been less mockery lately, which is very
comfortable.
"Ah, Graham-san
and Ginia-san! You've come for another quest today!"
"Yeah, we want to
earn as much money as we can. Could you pick out a quest for us again
today?"
"Of course! ...is
what I'd like to say, but before I pick out a quest, I have some good news for
you!"
"Good news? I
can't think of anything."
"Isn't it about
the E-rank promotion we were just talking about!? It is, right!?"
"Umm... It's a
little different, so it's hard to say, but it's something similar! Actually, if
you can complete your next quest, you'll be promoted to E-rank!"
Whoa! I heard we'd be
able to get promoted to E-rank soon, but we'll be promoted if we complete the
next quest?
We're doing well
enough as it is, but there's no harm in moving up a rank.
Although it's been
happening less lately as they've gotten used to me, the mockery of being a
rookie will probably disappear almost completely.
"That really is
good news. Does it matter what kind of quest we take?"
"Well, there's a
specific quest you have to take... It's to subjugate an Ogre that appears in
the southern plains. Ogres appear quite frequently in the southern plains, and
the quest is to subjugate one of them."
Ogre subjugation, huh.
Ogres are another type of monster with many varieties.
There are Red Ogres
and Blue Ogres, and their evolved forms, Flame Ogres and Ice Ogres.
I've heard that if
they evolve further, they change into something called a Kijin, but I've never
seen one myself.
"Ogre
subjugation... I think we can do it with you here, Graham-san, but they are a
pretty scary monster."
"Are they a
dangerous monster in your opinion, Ginia?"
"Yes. I've heard
that half of all rookie adventurers are killed by Ogres."
"That's right...
They're literally known as the wall for rookie adventurers. They're strong, but
they also often move in groups and are reasonably intelligent, so there are
many cases where humans end up being the ones hunted. I don't think you need to
force yourselves to take it, so please only accept this quest when you feel
you're ready."
A Kijin would be
another story, but I think I can hunt an Ogre easily.
Maybe there are other
types I don't know about, but the Black Caps, a type of goblin, were far
stronger than Flame Ogres or Ice Ogres.
"I'll leave the
final decision to you, Ginia, but I think we should take it."
"If you think we
should take it, Graham-san, then let's do it! Your judgment is bound to be
better than mine!"
"If you say so,
then let's accept the Ogre subjugation quest. Is it alright if we take the
quest, miss receptionist?"
"Of course it's
alright, but... please be very careful. I know you've been completing quests
every day, but Ogres are a rank stronger. There's no particular deadline for
this quest, so please don't push yourselves and turn back if you think it's
dangerous!"
"Thank you for
the warning, as always. I promise we absolutely won't overdo it."
After declaring that
to the receptionist, we accepted the Ogre subjugation quest and left the
Adventurer's Guild.
For her to warn us so
much, it must be a truly dangerous quest.
I myself don't feel a
strong sense of crisis, but... I should brace myself and head out to subjugate
the Ogre.
"By the way, do
we need any items or anything? Ever since I teamed up with you, Graham-san, we
haven't even bought a single healing potion."
"If you think you
need them, Ginia, you can buy some, but I think we'll be fine without them for
the most part. I can use healing magic, too."
"What!? You can
use healing magic too, Graham-san!!"
"Huh, I didn't
tell you? Well, we haven't had a situation where I needed to use it yet."
"You definitely
didn't! I'm pretty sure I heard that healing magic is something only clerics
can use! You weren't a priest or something before, were you?"
"I've never heard
that, and I was just a farmer who also worked as a soldier as a hobby."
"A soldier as a
hobby with that kind of strength... it's so insane that my brain can't keep up!
Please tell me in advance when there's something surprising!"
I feel like I'm seeing
Ginia's excitement level go haywire for the first time in a while.
Even if she tells me to
let her know in advance, I don't know what's considered normal and what isn't.
"Alright. I'll
report to you first if anything comes up."
"You better!
We're about to fight an Ogre, and I'm already tired from all the
surprises!"
We had that
conversation on our way out of town, and without stopping to buy anything in
particular, we headed for the southern plains.
The journey was
uneventful, and we arrived at the southern plains in no time.
Surprisingly, this was
my first time coming to the south side, and my first time seeing this vast,
open plain.
"Whoa, the view
is amazing! It makes me want to have a picnic!"
"A picnic does
sound nice. We could just grab some food from the stalls and sit in a field to
eat."
"That sounds
great! I'd want to lie down and take a nap, too!"
A picnic is very
appealing.
From the looks of it,
there aren't many monsters, so if we have the time, we might really come here
for a picnic.
While having that
conversation, we also began our search for today's objective, the Ogre.
I try to sense for its
presence, but... there's no Ogre-like presence nearby.
The receptionist said
that Ogres appear quite frequently. Could it be an Ogre I don't know about?
I've never seen an
Ogre weaker than a Red Ogre, but I can sense a few weak monster presences here
and there, so maybe this is the Ogre's presence.
"A picnic would
be nice, but first, let's focus on subjugating the Ogre. I just tried to sense
for its presence, but I couldn't confirm any Ogre-like reactions nearby."
"Maybe it's
further in? A customer who comes to drink at the tavern said there are lots of
Ogres in the plains, so it wouldn't be strange for one to be nearby..."
"Is that so? I'll
try widening my search range a bit, just in case."
Considering Ginia's information,
the scattered reactions I'm sensing in the plains might be Ogres.
Just in case, I
widened my search range to sense for monster presences and—though it was from
quite a distance, I found the reaction of an Ogre I knew, deep in the plains.
