Chapter 31
The Head
Translator : PolterGlast
We arrived back in
town a little after noon.
Although we were
accosted by the woman in black this morning, we might have completed this quest
faster than any other so far.
"If this
completes the quest, that means we'll be promoted to E-rank, right? Does this
call for a celebration today!?"
"We got back
early, so I don't mind celebrating... but didn't you say you had something to
do, Ginia?"
"—Ah! Today's the
day my friend is coming to visit Biodasdal! Ugh, I wanted to celebrate when my
happy feelings were at their peak..."
"Your happy
feelings will still be there tomorrow. Your friend came all this way to see
you, so you should give her a proper welcome."
"Yes, I will!
Let's definitely celebrate our E-rank promotion tomorrow!"
We talked like that,
even though we hadn't officially completed the quest yet, and made our way to
the Adventurer's Guild's delivery counter.
This place isn't
staffed by the beautiful receptionist, but by haggard-looking male employees.
Accepting deliveries
is a lot of physical work, and while adventurers might be nice to pretty women,
they are generally a rough bunch.
That double whammy is
probably why all the male employees here look so worn out.
"May I see your
adventurer cards?"
"Yeah.
Here."
"Thank you. ...An
Ogre subjugation quest, I see. Do you have proof of the kill?"
"I brought the
head. I'd like you to check it."
"Gah!? Y-you
brought the head!? ...Well, it's not against the rules, but an ear or something
is also fine, so from now on, please just bring an ear!!"
He showed a clear
sense of revulsion at the Ogre's severed head.
So bringing the
severed head was a bad idea after all.
"It looks very
similar to a goblin, so I thought an ear wouldn't be enough and brought the
whole head... Was that an unnecessary consideration?"
"Yes, a far too
unnecessary consideration! The Adventurer's Guild has to dispose of the head,
so please, I'm begging you, only bring an ear from now on!"
"I'll do that
next time. Sorry about this time."
He really drove the
point home, but this is completely my fault.
If everyone brought
back the heads of the monsters they killed, the Adventurer's Guild would be
buried in them.
He said it was fine
this time, so I sincerely apologized and swore to myself I'd never do it again.
"As long as you
understand, it's fine. The quest is now complete, so you're free to go."
"Complete? So
that monster was an Ogre, then?"
"...? Yes. It's
an Ogre. You brought the head with that understanding, did you not?"
"No, it's fine if
it's fine. Well then, we'll take our reward and be on our way."
After receiving the
reward for the completed quest from the male guild employee, we left the
Adventurer's Guild.
It seems that in this
region, a Lesser Ogre is recognized as an Ogre.
I was secretly looking
forward to going on an expedition to hunt one tomorrow, so it's a shame I won't
get to go.
But we cleared the
quest and got the reward, so I should be happy.
"We got told off,
didn't we?"
"It was my fault
for saying we should bring back the head. I got you involved too, Ginia."
"No, no, please
don't apologize! I didn't think it was strange either. Also... I was a little
disappointed that it really was an Ogre."
"Hmm? What do you
mean?"
"I was looking
forward to going on an expedition to defeat an Ogre tomorrow. So, I just felt a
little disappointed."
"...Actually, I
was thinking the same thing. An expedition to the far side of the plains with
you sounded like fun."
"Fufu, I'm glad
you were thinking the same thing, Graham-san. ...We've already completed the quest,
but should we go defeat a real Ogre tomorrow?"
"No, I don't
think we should do that."
"You think so? It
sounds fun to me, and I'd like to try it!"
We parted ways for the
day, which was early, as I walked Ginia back to the tavern while having this
conversation.
We've been spending
most of our time together since forming a party, and partly because Ginia keeps
the conversation going, there's almost never a lull.
Like every time, I
walk her back to the tavern, but our conversation is always in the middle of
something, so I always feel reluctant to part ways.
Well, we can't just
stand in front of the shop and chat, so I give up and head back.
Feeling reluctant to
leave, I left the tavern and returned to my inn for a bit.
I take a shower to
clean myself up, then get ready to go out again.
Since I got back so
early today, I plan to explore the town of Biodasdal by myself.
It's such a big town
with so many different shops and facilities, yet I haven't had a chance to see
any of them.
I got three silver
coins as a reward for the Ogre subjugation, so I'm thinking of grabbing some
street food while I walk.
Honestly, I'd like to
check out every shop that catches my eye and see all the unusual things, but
three silver coins is a little tight for that.
Grabbing street food
is about all I can do, but I'm sure I'll be more than satisfied just eating
while I explore the town.
Feeling excited,
unbecoming of my age, I set out into the town of Biodasdal.
