[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 38

Chapter 38

Incineration

Translator : PolterGlast

Now, as for the Red Ogres and the Flame Ogre, who had been wearing nothing but confident expressions in this forty-versus-one situation...

After five of their own were killed in an instant by an incomprehensible magic, their expressions had, at some point, turned serious.

This probably meant they were going to come at me with everything they had. —But it's too late.

While they were distracted watching the Red Ogre writhe on the ground, I had already spread my magic power around the area, completing my encirclement of the Ogres.

Once this happens, the only weakness of [Purifying Flame]—its slow speed—is gone, and it becomes a one-sided magical assault from me.

"First, let's see... I'll start with [Purifying Flame: Komainu]."

As if in response to my whisper, six dog-shaped flames suddenly appeared.

They raced across the ground towards the Red Ogres and, after effortlessly dodging their attacking steel clubs, began to bite them one after another.

The bitten Ogres were instantly engulfed in flames, and since this fire also wouldn't go out, they were quickly burned to death.

I am controlling all six of these dogs, and as I thought, the presence or absence of an arm has no effect on magic. I feel I can control them just as well as when I had both arms.

It's probably also because the Ogres' reactions were slow, but for now, it seems magic is the same whether I have one arm or two.

"Alright, next is... [Purifying Flame: Luan Bird]."

What appeared next was a large bird made of flames.

It flew up to eclipse the sun, then spread its great wings and charged into the fleeing, clustered Red Ogres.

This time, it engulfed about ten of them, turning them all into fireballs, and the charred corpses of Red Ogres began to pile up one after another.

I knew this would happen the moment I surrounded them with my magic, but it's so one-sided it doesn't even feel like a battle.

However, considering that the exhausted Ginia is on her knees, the reality is that I don't have the luxury of holding back.

I'll finish them all at once. I had just decided that and was about to unleash a final, big move, but...

The Flame Ogre, likely the boss of this horde, must have decided that further escape was futile, as it shifted its focus to me, the caster, and launched an attack.

It activated various skills and was moving with the full intention of finishing me off as quickly as possible.

I was planning on killing the Flame Ogre last, but now I have no choice but to kill it first.

Instead of the magic I had spread around, I activated a spell using the magic I had cloaked my own body with.

"[Purifying Flame: Crimson]."

Countless flames extended like tentacles toward the Flame Ogre.

It desperately tried to dodge, but the flames first wrapped around its ankles, then its thighs, hands, and arms, until it was completely captured by the fire I had unleashed.

Even so, it desperately stretched its legs, trying to advance and attack me... but finally, the tentacle-like flames wrapped around its entire body, and the Flame Ogre burst into a great blaze with a final scream.

It seems I put a little too much power into it, as the Flame Ogre was burned to cinders, not even leaving a corpse behind.

The Red Ogres who had been watching the Flame Ogre's end from behind threw down their clubs and scattered in all directions.

I wanted to burn them all at once with a big move, but now I have no choice but to chase them down with the dogs.

Though it was a spell I had just used, I had no choice but to use [Purifying Flame: Komainu] again to chase down the Red Ogres, and I burned every last one of them.

The plains, which had been so noisy just a moment ago, became as quiet as if it had all been a lie, and all that remained were the corpses of the Lesser Ogres Ginia had killed and the Ogres I had burned.

I had successfully defeated all the Ogres, but... thinking about it calmly, was it a bad idea to burn them with magic?

I've charred them all black, so no one will be able to tell the difference between them and the Lesser Ogres just by looking at the corpses.

Furthermore, I burned the Flame Ogre so completely that not a trace of it remains.

It's good that I had fun, but it was my first time using magic in a while, and I have to reflect on the fact that I overdid it a little.

As I was having these thoughts, a cheer went up from the adventurers who had been watching my battle from behind me.

"UOOOOOOOH!! He took out that horde of monsters in an instant!"

"AMAZIIIIIIING! I've never seen anything like that!!"

"Th-that scene... i-it wasn't a dream, right?"

"Of course it wasn't a dream! This many of us saw it!"

"Hey, is he really a rookie geezer who just became an adventurer? He's like a hero straight out of a heroic tale, isn't he!?"

"He's a hero! Definitely a her... wait, more importantly, y-you're in trouble. Y-you were making fun of him earlier, weren't you?"

"Ah, no... I-I mean... it's because I thought he was just a rookie geezer... Y-you were saying stuff about him being in a cocky phase, too!"

"Don't blame me. You should probably go grovel and apologize."

"O-of course I'll apologize, but... I wonder if he's angry. No, he came to save us and we treated him like that, of course he's angry."

After their excitement reached its peak, they realized their rudeness towards me, and their enthusiasm gradually cooled down, and now, it was completely chilled.

For a second, I thought about turning around and leaving them, but I guess I should tell them that I don't hold any grudge.
