Chapter 37
Purifying Fire
Translator : PolterGlast
"That girl...
s-she beat them all by herself! Hey, are you serious!?"
"Th-thank you.
You're my savior!"
Cheers of praise for
Ginia erupted, but the Ginia in question had both her knees on the ground,
completely drained of energy and drenched in sweat.
Though utterly
exhausted, she had killed every single one of the numerous Lesser Ogres that
had surrounded them, achieving a battle result that couldn't be better.
"...Haaah...
haaah. ...G-Graham-san, p-please, I'll leave the rest to you."
"You did well,
Ginia. I'll take it from here, so you just sit there and rest."
Just as Ginia finished
off the Lesser Ogres, the Red Ogres, led by the Flame Ogre, finally arrived
before us.
Seeing the corpses of
the numerous Lesser Ogres, they didn't seem to care at all; in fact, they
looked like they were sneering. From this, I could tell that to the Flame Ogre
and its kin, the Lesser Ogres were completely insignificant.
In truth, the
difference between a Lesser Ogre and an Ogre is so great that they could be
called different species of monster, so they probably have zero recognition of
them as their own kind.
Well, to me, what the
Ogres think doesn't matter either.
"Th-they're...
r-right in front of us."
"M-monsters!
D-don't come any closer!"
"Calm down. If
you stay quiet, this will be over soon."
After silencing the
screaming adventurers, I entrusted the exhausted Ginia to Aoi, whose trembling
was starting to subside, and then began my own preparations for battle.
I did a light warm-up,
jumping a little while rolling my neck and shoulders.
...My body's in good
condition. And I'm incredibly excited to finally have an opponent I can go all
out against.
Though, I am a little
disappointed that there are no Kijin, which I had been hoping for.
Well, just having a
Flame Ogre here is enough. Let's get to slaughtering them.
Just as I put my hand
on the hilt of my katana and was about to move in for the kill... another idea
suddenly came to mind.
—Should I use magic to defeat them today?
Ever since I lost my
arm, I've been using my katana to defeat monsters in order to test my one-armed
movements.
In the sense of not
wanting to forget the feel of magic, it might be a good idea to use it for
annihilation this time.
Now, as for which
magic to use... I guess my specialty, fire-attribute magic, will do.
Both Red Ogres and
Flame Ogres have a resistance to the fire attribute, but a resistance on the
level of a Flame Ogre is irrelevant.
It's been a while
since I've used magic, and I also just want to use my favorite spell without
having to accommodate my opponent.
Having decided on the
spell to use, I immediately raised my index finger, gathered my magic power,
and lit a flame upon it.
—Yeah. My magic seems to be in good shape today.
This act of lighting a
flame on my index finger is my usual routine; if the flame has a good color,
I'm usually in good condition.
Today, it's burning
brightly, so I think my magic power is in pretty good shape.
I pointed my fingertip
at the Red Ogre leading the charge and fired the flame.
Though I say
"fired," it wasn't fast like a bullet, but a beautiful, ball-like
flame that floated along like a piece of fluff.
The Red Ogre probably could
have dodged it easily, but perhaps because it knew it had fire resistance, it
took the hit with its body instead of avoiding it.
The flame I shot
landed on the Red Ogre's left thigh and began to burn faintly.
Even so, the Red
Ogre's expression remained a grin, and it took one step, then another towards
me, but—on the third step, it must have noticed something was wrong, as it
suddenly stopped.
The flame on its thigh
was slowly but surely spreading, and it must have been the first time in its
life that it had ever felt the sensation of being "hot."
It panicked and
slapped its thigh with its hand to put out the flame, but this was a huge
mistake.
The flame from its
thigh spread to the hand that had slapped it, and in the blink of an eye, the
Red Ogre's left leg and left arm were engulfed in crimson flames.
Unable to bear the
intense heat, it writhed on the ground, but the flames showed no sign of going
out.
And for good reason.
The flame I shot at the Red Ogre is an original spell called [Purifying Flame].
It's a spell I
created, a fire-attribute spell that reacts to and burns the magicules that
flow only within monsters. Once ignited, it will not go out until the monster
is dead.
It has the demerits of
a slow projectile speed and requiring a vast amount of magic power to be
kneaded into it, but it has the merit of not burning anything other than
monsters, so I've found it very useful.
If the Red Ogre had
realized the properties of this spell and cut off its left leg, it might have
been saved, but now that the flames have spread to its whole body, it's too
late.
As it thrashed about,
it caught five other Red Ogres nearby in the flames, and in an instant, all
five of them were burnt to a crisp.
"You, you went to
the Royal Magic Academy, didn't you!? That rookie geezer... w-what kind of
magic was that, that just burned that monster?"
"Th-that was
magic...? I've... n-never seen anything like that!"
In response to the
excited adventurers, I raised my index finger to my mouth in a gesture to be
quiet.
The two adventurers
who had been talking loudly covered their mouths with both hands and nodded
their heads repeatedly—now I can focus on subjugating the Ogres.
