Chapter 36
The Training Dummy
Translator : PolterGlast
I could take out the
Lesser Ogres myself, but I want Ginia to fight them.
We still have a few
minutes of leeway before the main Ogre force arrives.
"Ginia and Aoi. I
want the two of you to take care of the Lesser Ogres blocking the rear... does
that seem impossible?"
When I looked back,
Aoi's knees were shaking uncontrollably, and she was trembling so much it
looked like she was about to collapse.
The other adventurers
were in a similar state, and many of them had already collapsed, unable to
move.
"G-graham! A-are
you really going to fight those monsters? I saw you defeat the Golems, but if
you value your life, you absolutely shouldn't! L-let's just, the three of us,
r-run away together!"
The fact that she
suggested the three of us run away together instead of just running by herself
raises my opinion of her slightly.
However, I accepted
yesterday's quest with the intention of defeating those Ogres in the first place,
so sorry Aoi, but I won't be choosing to run away here.
"It's fine. The
Lesser Ogre horde is a given, but even compared to the approaching Ogre horde,
I'm... at a low estimate, about a hundred times stronger. So, all of you, stay
right where you are."
"Fufu, you don't
have to worry, Aoi-chan! Graham-san will definitely win! That said, I'll fight
the Lesser Ogres! You'll give me instructions, right?"
"Good. You'll
fight then, Ginia? ...This time, I'm going to give you detailed instructions
for everything. Do not, under any circumstances, forget the feeling of this
battle."
"Yes! I await
your instructions!"
I had the immobilized
Aoi and the other adventurers wait where they were, and Ginia and I headed
towards the Lesser Ogres blocking our rear.
I let Ginia take the
lead, and I focused on giving her more precise instructions than usual from
directly behind her.
"You don't have
to think about anything this time. Just listen to my words."
"Understood! I'll
leave the piloting of me to you, Graham-san!"
This is something she
couldn't do without trusting me completely, and I knew from our earlier
exchange that she did.
Until now, I thought
giving detailed instructions wasn't a good idea and had her move based on her
own thoughts to some extent, but I think it's good for her to experience what
optimal movement is like at least once.
We're in the perfect
situation with a horde of Lesser Ogres before us, so I'll have them serve as
Ginia's practice dummies.
I just need to be
ready to save her with magic if things get dangerous—and with that, I began my
instructions to Ginia.
"Lower your
stance and charge at the Lesser Ogre in front of you. Then, on my signal, take
a backstep and immediately slide diagonally forward to the right to get behind
it. Three... two... one, now!"
I had her dodge the
Lesser Ogre's downward swing with a backstep timed perfectly with its attack,
and then had her get behind it without a moment's pause.
Normally, Ginia would
take a breath after dodging, but an enemy is most vulnerable right after they
attack.
The Lesser Ogre,
unable to follow Ginia's fluid movements, was left with its back completely
exposed.
Once she was perfectly
behind it, there was nothing to be afraid of.
"Thrust your
sword at its heart."
Ginia reacted
instantly to my instruction, stabbing her sword through its back and piercing
the Ogre's heart.
Even if she hadn't
been able to pierce its heart here, I was planning to finish it off with magic
on the pretense that she had, but as expected of someone with good eyes, she
was able to pierce its heart perfectly.
The first Lesser Ogre
collapsed to the ground easily, but two more from the left and right
immediately closed in.
This is—I think I can
use their two attacks to our advantage.
"Ginia, focus immediately.
Pull out your sword and prepare for an attack. On my signal, move two steps
back and three steps to the right, then crouch down. Once you're in that
position, you don't need to take any evasive action. —Here we go. ...Three...
two... one. Now."
Just as the two Lesser
Ogres raised their clubs as if in unison, I had Ginia move to the specified
position.
With their stationary
target having moved slightly, the Lesser Ogres slightly altered the direction
of their attacks.
She hadn't moved
enough to make them stop their attack, and their clubs were already swinging
down.
The two Lesser Ogres
re-aimed at the now-moved Ginia, and the clubs that were swung with all their
might—smashed into each other.
It was a scene that
could only be described as self-destruction.
This is what I was
aiming for, but it's so comical and amusing when it works this well.
"A-amazing. I can
dodge their attacks without desperately trying to evade, and even deal
damage...!"
"Don't lose your
focus. They're not dead yet."
After calling out to
Ginia, who had relaxed her guard, I had her deliver the finishing blows to the
two self-destructed Lesser Ogres.
With this, she had
successfully defeated three Lesser Ogres in an instant, but there were still
many more left.
I'll keep giving Ginia
instructions at this pace and have her fight until the very last moment before
the main Ogre force arrives.
