[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Reconciliation

Translator : PolterGlast

The day after our celebratory dinner for the E-rank promotion and the emergency quest victory.

We gathered early in the morning and made our way to the Adventurer's Guild.

Incidentally, Aoi was not with us. She had drunk her fill yesterday, so she was probably still asleep.

This was the perfect time, while we weren't being pestered by Aoi, so we had to go to the Adventurer's Guild now.

"Yaaawn. My muscles are so sore, I couldn't sleep well yesterday."

"Sorry about that. We made a lot of money from the emergency quest, so we could have taken a day off, but..."

"We have to apologize to the receptionist! Even though we completed it safely, there's still this nagging feeling from having pushed through her advice, and I can't postpone it just because I'm sleepy!"

"It's a big help that you feel that way too, Ginia. I wanted to go and apologize as soon as possible."

Our reason for going to the Adventurer's Guild today was more to apologize than to accept a quest.

I didn't want to let days go by while we were on bad terms.

I was feeling a little nervous when we arrived at the Adventurer's Guild.

I haven't had a dispute with anyone in over twenty years, so I'm a little scared to apologize.

"...She's at her usual counter. Let's go apolo—Are you nervous, Graham-san?"

"Y-yeah. The thought of not being forgiven is making my body go stiff."

"Fufu, it'll be okay! The receptionist is a kind person, so she'll forgive you if you apologize! It's strange, you're so calm in front of an Ogre horde, but your body stiffens up when you go to apologize to the receptionist!"

"An Ogre horde isn't scary..."

Pathetically, I let Ginia lead the way, and we arrived at the receptionist's counter.

There was no cheerful greeting like usual, and my heart was definitely beating faster than when I had faced the Ancient Dragon.

"Miss Receptionist! We are so sorry about yesterday!"

"We were truly sorry for ignoring your warning. I don't know if you can forgive us, but we came today just to tell you how sorry we are."

"........................"

We bowed at a ninety-degree angle and offered a sincere apology from the bottom of our hearts, but there was no reply from the receptionist.

My heart was beating so fast and hard that I thought the sound might be leaking outside my body.

"............Haaah. I can't stay mad if you apologize like that! Do you have any idea how worried I was!? You'd better have learned your lesson!"

"We're so sorry! We had a long talk yesterday and decided we will never ignore your warnings and take a quest again!"

"In that case, I have no choice but to forgive you! Not that I'm really in a position to forgive you or anything!"

I had kept my head bowed this whole time, but hearing her say she forgave us, I felt a profound sense of relief.

If the receptionist, who was also my benefactor, hadn't forgiven me, my spirit would have surely been crushed.

"I'm so glad she forgave us! See, Graham-san? We've been forgiven! ...Wait, are you crying!?"

"N-no, sorry. I was just really, truly relieved."

"Please don't cry! It makes me look like the bad guy! Besides, I was just worried; I wasn't really angry!"

The moment I heard her words of forgiveness, tears started to fall, just a little.

I didn't mean to cry, but I feel like I've become more prone to tears since leaving the village.

"Sorry. I was just so relieved that I cried a little. Again, thank you for forgiving me."

"Ugh, I didn't think I had made you that anxious! I'm the one who should be sorry for the foolish act of getting angry just because you took a quest, ignoring my position as a receptionist who arranges jobs!"

"Please don't apologize. I know you were angry because you were concerned for our safety. I'd be happy if you'd continue to get genuinely angry at us if you think something is dangerous in the future."

"If you say so... then I will continue to stop you with all my might! For now, let's just call it even on this matter!"

The receptionist said that with a smile.

I was so glad to see that smile, as bright as the sun.

I almost started crying again, but I couldn't show any more disgraceful behavior, so I fought with all my might to hold back the tears.

After that, she picked out a recommended quest for us, and we left the Adventurer's Guild.

"Phew, I'm glad she forgave us!"

"I really am. That might have been the scariest moment of my life."

"I want to say you're kidding, but seeing you back there, I think you were serious! It's a little funny that the invincible Graham-san's weakness is the receptionist."

"It's not funny at all. I was genuinely scared."

As we were having that conversation and walking from the Adventurer's Guild to the gate, we heard a familiar voice from behind us.

"I-I found you—! Leaving me behind is too cruel!! You heartless people!"

It was Aoi, who must have come in a hurry. It looked like she had jumped out of bed and rushed over; her hair was a mess and she wasn't wearing her usual black clothes.

"We just accepted a simple quest. Besides, you're not in the party yet."

"You're still saying that!? I joined yesterday! If you leave me behind again, I won't forgive you!"

With Aoi shouting and fuming in the morning, we headed out for the quest we had just accepted.
