[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Chapter 42

Chapter 42

An Important Conversation

Translator : PolterGlast

A week passed in the blink of an eye.

Nothing particularly noteworthy happened during that time; we just spent our days completing quests.

We haven't struggled at all with the E-rank quests, and things have been going so smoothly it's almost too good to be true.

Ginia and Aoi have been defeating the monsters, and it's a little sad that I haven't had a single turn to fight since the Ogre horde, but...

Ginia has been growing at an astonishing rate every day, and it seems like she's completely awakened ever since she mowed down that horde of Lesser Ogres.

She hasn't reached Aoi's level yet, but her performance in battle makes me think she'll catch up eventually.

Watching Ginia grow like this is truly enjoyable, and just spending these pleasant days is more than enough, but there's been something I've wanted to do for a quite a while.

Now that we have a steady income, I've asked Ginia to meet at the tavern today to make that proposal.

"You have something important to talk about today, Graham-san. ...I'm getting a little nervous."

"Yeah. Sorry for making you take the time. I called you here today because there's something I wanted to talk to you about, Ginia... but of course, Aoi is here too."

She's been following us around constantly lately, so I've gotten used to it, but there Aoi was, sitting next to Ginia as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

She was eating snacks and drinking, and since I was planning on having a relatively serious conversation, it was very distracting.

"Of course I'll listen in! I'm your comrade too!"

"Then be quiet. This is a discussion with Ginia, so don't interrupt, okay?"

"I know, I know! ...Oh, another beer, please!"

Aoi ordered another beer right after saying she understood.

At this point, it's a waste of energy to worry about her, so I'll just proceed as if she's not here.

"I'm just going to ignore Aoi and move on. Is it alright if I get straight to the point?"

"What! W-wait a minute! Just let me take a deep breath! Inhale............ Exhale......... O-okay, I'm ready."

For some reason, Ginia began to take deep breaths with a solemn expression on her face.

She seems to be taking this very seriously, but it's not that big of a deal, so I got straight to the point without pausing.

"We've been completing quests without any problems even after getting promoted to E-rank, right? We're starting to get some leeway with our money, and I think we've become stable enough that we can afford to use our free time. So, with that said—I'm thinking of starting to do 'good deeds'."

"W-whaa... Thank goodness. You said it was a serious talk, so I thought you were going to say you were disbanding the party! ............Huh? But, g-good deeds? You mean, like, doing good things?"

Ginia placed a hand on her heart and let out a huge sigh.

Then, the "good deeds" part of what I said seemed to catch her attention, and her expression shifted from relief to confusion.

"I have no intention of suggesting we disband the party, so you can rest assured. —That's right. I'm thinking of doing good things."

"I think the more good things you do, the better, but what exactly are you planning on doing?"

"That's the part I'm still figuring out. But the general idea is to help people in trouble. This is something I had decided on even before I came to Biodasdal."

The old woman I met in a village on my way from Furo Village to Biodasdal.

She was kind to me despite my suspicious appearance, and at that time, she told me, 'If you want to repay my kindness, then be kind to someone else who's in trouble, in my place.'

Ever since she said those words to me, I've wanted to be of help to someone someday.

The kindness the receptionist showed me also seems to have spurred on this feeling.

"Hmm? Is just taking quests not good enough? People in trouble post requests at the Adventurer's Guild, right? So if we keep completing quests, we'll be helping people in trouble, won't we? You helped those adventurers during the Ogre incident, too."

"I had thought about that too, and we are, in fact, accepting and completing quests, but... I feel like it's somehow different. We're receiving payment commensurate with the quests, so it feels more like we're the ones being helped. In my mind, it's a job, not a good deed."

I feel that the moment you receive compensation, you can't call it a good deed.

I haven't decided on any specifics yet, but I just want to be of help to people in trouble.

"You mean you want to help someone without any compensation, right? I think that's very like you, Graham-san! What specifically will you do? I'll help you!"

"No, I can't possibly trouble you, Ginia. I was planning on doing these good deeds by myself. I just wanted to tell you that from now on, I won't be able to take on quests every day."

"Hmph. If we're not doing quests, I'll be bored with nothing to do, and I want to do good deeds too! Besides, you haven't even decided what you're going to do yet, have you, Graham-san?"

"I haven't decided yet, but I plan to figure that out. Why don't you try making sweets, Ginia?"

She had told me her dream was to be a pastry chef, so she could use her free time to chase that dream.

I made that suggestion with her best interests at heart, but she puffed out her cheeks and shot me an angry look.

"Are you trying to exclude me!? I'm interested in making sweets, but I'm not thinking about it right now! It would be disrespectful to both if I were to be half-assed about it, and right now, I just want to focus on being an adventurer! So I'm going to help you no matter what!"

"Ahaha! I like that, Ginia! If that's the case, I'll help too! It sounds interesting!"

Aoi jumped on board with Ginia's opinion, and they both started saying they would help.

I didn't want to trouble either of them, but if they're this insistent... should I let them help?

"If that's the case... is it really okay if I have you help?"

"Of course! I was planning on helping from the start!"

"I'll help too! So, what are we doing?"

"Like I said, I haven't decided that yet."

"Then let's just continue this conversation and figure out what to do!"

I can't help but feel like this has become a big deal, but if the two of them are going to do it with me, it does sound like it could be fun.

If we can have fun doing good deeds, then there's nothing more win-win for everyone involved.
