Chapter 48
The Visitor

Since the room was
small, we were both standing, but we had no choice but to proceed with our
conversation like this.
It was a strange
situation, being alone in a room with a monster, but I started the conversation
with the Dead Priest.
"Alright, there
are a few things I want to ask you... What did you come to the city for?"
"I came to see
you, Graham-sama! There was some information I needed to get to you urgently,
so I risked coming to the city."
I had wondered if it
was planning something, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
For an undead, its
eyes were strangely sparkling, and while I thought it might just be on the
surface, it truly seemed to be subservient.
"I thought you
might have come to attack me, but you came all the way to the city just to talk
to me?"
"A-attack you,
please don't say such things! After seeing your power, Graham-sama, I couldn't
possibly think of defying you!"
"Well, I don't
mind then, but what was so important that you had to come all the way to the
city to tell me?"
"I'll get
straight to the point. First... in this area, there's the Berserk Bear to the
west, the Red Ogres to the south, and the Silver Golem to the north. And to the
east, I rule over the monsters as their leader."
"Hmm? What's this
all of a sudden?"
"Please hear me
out! Um, so, thanks to the power of us four being in balance, nothing happened
among the monsters, and we lived in relative peace. But just the other day, the
Red Ogres to the south were defeated by someone. Because of that, the balance
in this whole area has crumbled, and things have started to get chaotic.
...Some real troublemaker had to show up!"
The Red Ogres to the
south were defeated the other day... that was probably the Ogres I defeated,
wasn't it?
It started bad-mouthing
the culprit before I could confess that it was me, so I completely lost my
chance to speak up. But I guess I have to say it now.
"Sorry, but I was
the one who wiped out that horde of Red Ogres."
"—Huh? ...What!?
Y-you were the one who did it, Graham-sama? Th-then there's nothing wrong at
all! It's the Ogres' fault for getting themselves killed instead of
surrendering immediately like I did!"
I couldn't help but
laugh at its incredible change of heart.
After hearing its
resentful tone just moments ago, this change of direction is just too much.
"It's fine if it
was my fault. I did kill them without knowing the situation."
"No, no, there's
nothing that you could have done wrong, Graham-sama! There were also talks of
the Red Ogres making a move to take this city, so you subjugated them for that
reason, right?"
"Well, yeah. I
heard the Ogres were invading, so I moved to subjugate them."
"I knew it! Thank
goodness... It was all the Red Ogres' fault!"
I have no idea what
was so good about it, but the Dead Priest's reaction is amusing, so I'll let it
slide.
More importantly,
there's one thing that's been bothering me. The people in Biodasdal couldn't
tell the difference between Lesser Ogres and Red Ogres, but the Dead Priest
clearly called them Red Ogres.
I want to ask if,
among monsters, Red Ogres and Lesser Ogres are recognized as different species.
If they are recognized
as different species, then I should probably also mention that there was a
Flame Ogre mixed in with the Red Ogres.
"More importantly,
there's something I want to ask. Is 'Red Ogre' a common term among
monsters?"
"Yes, that's
right. Red Ogres are a higher-ranking species of Ogre!"
"Huh. So that
green monster is also an Ogre, then."
"Yes. That
monster is recognized as a normal Ogre. Though their appearance and abilities
are completely different."
"I see. In that
case, there's one more thing I should tell you. When I wiped out the horde of
Red Ogres, there was a Flame Ogre mixed in. Was that information that you were
aware of?"
"A Flame Ogre was
mixed in!? ...So that means the reason they suddenly started their invasion was
because a Flame Ogre was born. Th-this is something I need to report
immediately—no, Graham-sama comes first!"
The moment it heard my
information, it became flustered and was about to rush out of the room, but it
seemed to have reconsidered.
I've thought this ever
since it begged for its life, but it's a really un-monster-like monster.
"The reason you
came all the way to tell me was to warn me that the Red Ogres were killed by
someone, right? I've got it, so you can go now."
"No, that was
part of it, but... with the Red Ogres gone, the monsters' movements have
started to become more active as they aim for the now-vacant southern area! The
Berserk Bear has also started to move, and if the Berserk Bear, which has its
base in the area northwest of this city, makes a move to take it—"
"It'll have to
pass through this city?"
"As expected of
you, Graham-sama, you catch on quick! That's right. So, for now, please be
careful of the Berserk Bear! Though I suppose it's an unnecessary worry for
you, who defeated a Flame Ogre."
"No, it was a big
help that you came all this way to give me this information. I'll come visit
you myself sometime soon."
"No, no, I can't
possibly take up your time, Graham-sama, so I will come—"
"No, it'll be a
pain if you're found when you come to the city, so I'll go. You can leave
now."
"Understood! I
will be waiting for you at the old abandoned road! Well then, if you'll excuse
me!"
After bowing its head
over and over, the Dead Priest rushed out of the room.
What a whirlwind of a
creature, from start to finish.
Still, so defeating
the Ogre horde has made the monsters' movements more active... huh.
Even if it couldn't be
helped, it's my responsibility. Maybe my first 'good deed' can be to suppress
these newly active monsters.
