Chapter 69
How to Spend Money
Translator : PolterGlast
Feeling completely
stuck, a period of silence continued.
It was the Guild
Master who broke that heavy silence.
"............Why
don't you just start your own charitable organization, Graham-san? Like opening
that orphanage Aoi was just talking about."
"That's a great
idea! The Graham Orphanage! I'm all for it!"
"If there are no
other options, then I suppose it's one to consider. Though I absolutely don't
want my name in it."
"Opening an
orphanage, that's incredible! Well, I guess you could do it, Graham!"
"No, I still
don't have any vision for it. Besides, it's not something you can just start by
saying you're going to, is it?"
"You don't have
to worry about that. I'll be your backer. The Guild Master of the Adventurer's
Guild has more power and trust than you might think, Graham-san."
I had only thought of
him as an emotionally unstable super-weirdo, but this is the first time the
Guild Master has seemed like a proper, reliable person.
He's still the Guild
Master, after all.
"If that's the
case, then I'll move forward with the intention of opening an orphanage, though
I'll be relying on you. By the way, what will I need?"
"First, the
purchase of land and a building. Finding facility staff. Then, staff salaries
and operating costs. In short, a massive amount of money."
"Is the money I
received this time not enough?"
"No, it's not
enough. You'd need about five times that amount to have enough for the initial
costs."
I thought I had
obtained a great fortune, but I need five times this much?
Now that it's come to
this, I should have harvested materials from the Berserk Bears I crushed with
gravity magic.
The only noteworthy
monster left near the town of Biodasdal is the Gold Golem, and even if we
harvest and sell its materials like this time, it won't be enough.
Carelessly burning the
Ogres might have been a huge blow as well.
"We just don't
have enough money. If there were strong monsters, I'd go hunt them, but they
don't just appear so easily."
"Well, it's not
something to rush. You've just decided on how to use the money earned from your
good deeds; it's not something you have to do right now. It takes time to find
land and buildings, and you can't find facility staff that easily either. You
can just proceed slowly while continuing your main work as an adventurer."
Being reasoned with by
the Guild Master, I was able to calm down considerably.
My main job is being
an adventurer. I'll do good deeds when I have free time, and if I get money
from those good deeds, I'll pool it into the operating funds for the orphanage.
I've gotten Ginia and
Aoi involved too, so I shouldn't get too caught up in it.
"You're right.
I've calmed down. Still, you were a big help today. It was the right decision
to consult you, Guild Master."
"It was! I don't
think we ever would have come up with that idea on our own!"
"I don't think
that's true, but in any case, if you need to talk about anything in the future,
please do. As I've said before, I'll do what I can as the Guild Master."
"That's seriously
reassuring. I'm counting on you in the future."
"Leave it to me.
For now, I'll start looking into land and buildings on my end."
After a firm handshake
with the Guild Master, we left his office.
That was a tumultuous
turn of events.
"Things progressed
all at once! Defeating dangerous monsters and operating an orphanage with the
money we earn. That really feels like a good deed!"
"Yeah. I had some
doubts about just defeating monsters being a good deed. I feel like the Guild
Master has shown us the way."
"I think
defeating a dangerous monster that was heading for the city is a perfectly good
deed, though! It's just that your strength is so absurd, Graham. Even if an
emergency quest was posted, I don't think many adventurers would have accepted
it!"
"Is that so? I
guess that's just a difference in perception."
I think the fact that
I did it as a matter of course in Furo Village is a big factor.
The concept of an
"adventurer" didn't exist, and protecting the town from monsters was
our daily life.
We naturally didn't
receive any reward for it, so my perception of it as a "good deed" is
weak.
"So what's the
plan now? Another good deed monster subjugation?"
"No, first I'm
thinking of going to the old abandoned road to see Bane. After I get some
information from him, I plan to go defeat the Silver Golem horde
tomorrow."
"We're fighting
the Silver Golem tomorrow...? We just fought the Berserk Bear a week ago;
that's a pretty fast pace."
"That's just what
I was hoping for! I was useless last time, so this time I'll nail it!"
"Yeah. I have
high hopes for you two."
It's only been a week,
so they probably haven't grown that much, but it seemed like they were trying
something new. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the two of them will
strategize to fight the Silver Golem.
As for me, I'll think
about how to defeat the Gold Golem as cleanly as possible.
The better the
condition it's left in, the more its materials will sell for.
Thinking about
tomorrow, we left the town of Biodasdal and headed for the old abandoned road
to see Bane.
