Chapter 72
The Golem's Nature
Translator : PolterGlast
After sorting out the
jumbled conversation that had been a series of surprises, I got the full story
of what had happened around Bane.
The sequence of events
was: I named Bane → he evolved into his
current state → the Demon Lord's army
executive Borfly arrived → he cleaned up the old abandoned road → the present.
I think I've grasped
the whole situation, but there are still a mountain of things I want to know
about Bane's abilities...
But for now, I'll put
that aside and talk about the original purpose of my visit: the matter of the
rulers of the north, south, east, and west.
"This is where
our story finally begins. We defeated the Berserker Bear about a week
ago."
"Ooh! As expected
of you, Graham-sama! You have already defeated the Berserker Bear!"
"I don't know
what to say to that, coming from the one who defeated an executive of the Demon
Lord's army... In any case, I harvested its ear, so please confirm if it's
really a Berserker Bear."
I took out the
Berserker Bear ear I had harvested to show Bane and handed it to him.
After a careful
inspection, he nodded forcefully.
"There is no
mistake! This is definitely a Berserker Bear!"
"I see. I'm glad
to know it wasn't a mistake. And one more thing, I'm thinking of defeating the
Gold Golem next. If you have any information, I'd like you to share it."
"The Gold
Golem...? Without troubling you, Graham-sama, I can go and defeat it myself. I
have grown stronger thanks to you, and I believe I can probably defeat
it!"
He thumped his chest
and made that proposal.
If it were the old me,
I would have entrusted it to him without a second thought, but things are
different now.
Partly because I want
the materials from the kill, my desire to defeat it myself is strong.
"No, I want to be
the one to defeat the Gold Golem. Though I appreciate your offer, Bane."
"Is that so. In
that case, I will give you all the information I possess! First, the Gold Golem
makes its home on the mountain that towers to the north—'Marx Mountain'!"
Marx Mountain... if I
remember correctly, that's the mountain beyond the northern mountainous region
where we encountered the [Unbearable God Cult].
We often went to the
northern mountainous region for quests, but we've never been as far as Marx
Mountain.
"I see. So the
Gold Golem is on Marx Mountain."
"Yes! Now, I will
give you a simple explanation of Golems! Golems are monsters with rock-like
bodies in the shape of a human, and they have ore as their staple food."
As for common Golems,
I fought them in the northern mountainous region when I was protecting the
[Unbearable God Cult].
Million Golems also
appeared occasionally near Furo Village, so they are a monster I have a fair
bit of combat experience with.
"Golems bring
back memories! I remember being convinced that your strength was the real deal
after watching you fight that Golem!"
"Me too! I was
watching from a crack in the tent while tied up, but you cut down a Golem
that's said to be immune to physical attacks! I started pestering you to find
out the trick... but you really did cut it down with pure skill, no tricks
involved!"
The two of them
reminisced, voicing their thoughts from that time.
It wasn't that long
ago, but it's strange how with so much happening, it feels like an event from
the distant past.
"You have combat
experience with them, Graham-sama! In that case, my explanation was not
needed."
"No, I'm curious,
so please tell me."
"Really? Then I
will continue! Golems are monsters that change their form depending on the
minerals they eat, and it is said that because there is a lot of silver ore on
Marx Mountain, it became a horde of Silver Golems."
Huh. That's
information I didn't know at all.
So that means if you
feed them gold ore, they become a Gold Golem, and if you feed them mithril ore,
they become a Mithril Golem?
That sounds kind of
interesting. It makes me want to try raising one.
"Um... there's
something I was wondering. If they only eat minerals, why do Golems attack
people? Is there no particular reason, just because they're monsters?"
"That is part of
it... but Golems mostly attack adventurers, and I believe they do so because
adventurers are carrying high-quality precious metals. To a Golem, the swords
and armor that humans carry are the finest ingredients."
"That's
interesting. I never thought about it deeply, but they do have a proper reason
for their actions."
This is something only
a monster would know.
I like these kinds of
stories, so it's very intriguing and interesting.
"That's right.
...However, for that reason, Golems rarely attack other monsters! Therefore,
Marx Mountain is inhabited by countless other troublesome monsters besides the
Silver Golems, so please be very careful! Though I suppose it is an unnecessary
worry for you, Graham-sama."
The Berserk Bear horde
chased after other monsters, but the Silver Golems don't do that.
So that's why many
other monsters live there.
I wasn't expecting
much, but I was able to get more information than I had anticipated.
Based on this
information from Bane, I guess we'll challenge the Gold Golem subjugation
tomorrow.
