Chapter 78
The Journey Home
Translator : PolterGlast
I returned, carrying
the remains of the Gold Golem, but the two's reactions were relatively normal.
I thought they would
be more dramatically surprised, but perhaps they've gotten used to it.
"Good work,
Graham-san! That was an amazing fight, as expected!"
"What was that
ice magic? All the Silver Golems stopped moving at once, didn't they!?"
"It's a normal
ice magic. It's a composite spell, so it's difficult to handle, but it's quite
a convenient spell once you get used to it."
"It was
absolutely not normal! Well, I guess for you, it is."
"Fufu, being with
you, Graham-san, really messes with your sense of normal! Even seeing you carry
the remains of an impossibly huge Golem like this doesn't surprise me that much
anymore."
"...It's true!
This might be a foolish question for you, Graham, but are you going to carry
that down the mountain?"
"Of course."
To be honest, there
was no urgent need to subjugate the Gold Golem.
It was in a cave
inside a mountain, and even if it were to come and attack humans, it would have
been a long time from now.
But if I was going to
defeat it, then it's only right to make effective use of it instead of just
leaving it there.
...Well, a desire for
money is part of it too.
"Should we take
back the materials from the Silver Golems, too?"
"I don't think
you need to force yourselves to carry them back, but it would be a help if you
could take just the parts that fit in your bags and are likely to sell for a
high price."
"If you say so...
you mean the eye parts and the area around the core?"
"Alright! Let's
harvest them quickly and head back! If we dawdle, the sun will set!"
"Right. Let's get
moving."
To avoid having to
camp out, we moved quickly and harvested the Silver Golem parts.
Then, after finishing the
collection of the valuable-looking parts, we began our descent to get back to
the city as soon as possible.
"You two go back
the way we came and wait for me at the entrance to the hidden passage. There
are no signs of any noteworthy monsters, so I think you can get through without
encountering any."
"...Huh? You're
not coming with us, Graham-san?"
"I can't get
through that narrow passage while carrying the remains of the Gold Golem. I'm
going to climb up the cliff face and get out that way."
"What!? You're
going to climb with all that luggage!?"
"It's not that
difficult. If I use gravity magic, I can get out from the top easily."
"I find that a
little hard to believe, but if it's you, you can do it, I guess... Okay! I'll
wait with Aoi-chan at the exit of the hidden passage!"
"Yeah. See you
later."
After bidding the two
a temporary farewell, I chanted the [Gravity Magic - Decrease] spell.
Then, I jumped with
all my might, aiming to escape from above.
The footing is
unstable, but if I slip, I can just create a foothold with ice magic.
I climbed steadily
with light steps and was able to get out in no time.
And the position I'm
in now is near the summit.
While I was on my way
back, I had planned to hunt the flying monster I had found near the summit on
the way in, but...
"I noticed its
presence had disappeared, but it seems it's really gone now."
The flying creature
had left as if fleeing the moment I had killed the Gold Golem in an instant.
I wanted to defeat it,
seeing as it had power comparable to the Gold Golem and was a monster that Bane
was unaware of, but if it has fled, there's nothing I can do.
If it were a
land-based monster, I could have chosen to pursue it, but it's impossible to
chase something that has flown away into the sky.
Feeling a little
regret that I should have defeated this monster first instead of the Gold
Golem, I gave up completely and headed for the entrance of the hidden passage
where the two were waiting.
"So fast!? Why
are you here before us, Graham-san!?"
"That's not
possible unless you teleported!"
"I just climbed
up and came down. More importantly, were you two okay with the monsters on the
way?"
"Yes. We were
fine! To worry about us after taking such a dangerous route..."
"I'm glad you
were okay. It'll be evening soon, so let's get down the mountain quickly. I'd
rather not have the sun set on us while we're in the mountains."
From here, all we have
to do is descend.
The two of them are
probably at their physical limit, so I'll choose the shortest possible route
that avoids monsters.
Because I'm carrying
the piled-up remains of the Gold Golem, my only remaining arm is occupied, so I
can't use my flying slash.
Feeling the drawback
of having one arm again, we turned back the way we came and set off on the road
home.
About seven hours
after leaving the hidden passage.
It had become
completely dark, but we somehow managed to make it back to the town of
Biodasdal.
"Haaah, we
finally made it. That might have been the toughest one I've ever had."
"You two, you've
worked really hard. Tomorrow is a full rest day."
"Thank goodness!
Knowing you, Graham, I thought you were going to say we were doing a quest
tomorrow!"
"I'm not that
much of a demon. Anyway... where should I put the remains of this Gold
Golem?"
"Oh, that's
right, the Guild Master isn't in town! But don't you think they'll hold onto it
for us if we take it to the Adventurer's Guild?"
If the Guild Master
were here, he would have taken it as is, but I'm a little worried if it's okay
to bring it in.
Well, thanks to my
several visits, there are guild employees who know my face, so it should be
fine to bring it in.
"It's a good
thing it got so late, isn't it? If we had entered the city carrying a Gold
Golem, it would have surely caused a huge commotion!"
"True... I hadn't
thought that far ahead, but as it turns out, arriving late at night was the
right call."
Having that
conversation on our way back into the city, and after causing a bit of a stir,
I managed to leave the remains of the Gold Golem at the Adventurer's Guild,
then bought a light meal and returned to my inn.
