[WN] A Hero From a Remote Village : Interlude 10

Interlude 10

The Guild Masters' Meeting, Part 1

Translator : PolterGlast

The Royal Capital - Adventurer's Guild.

The voices of needlessly pompous old men echoed throughout the spacious conference room.

An emergency meeting had been called, and gathered in this conference room were the Guild Masters of the five major cities in the Kingdom of Gulzalm.

Although Biodasdal was a large city, it was a rank below the other four. That, combined with Dwayne's background as a former adventurer, left him unable to get a word into the conversation.

"It seems the city of Klingark has finally produced an S-class adventurer."

"Wahaha! We've been endlessly ridiculed, but [Crimson Rose] has finally been promoted to S-class! With this, not only will we not be mocked by you all... but [Crimson Rose] are all young women in their twenties! Their future is bright and they're a hot topic! I feel fantastic!"

"You're that excited over a single S-class adventurer party? My city produced three S-class adventurers last year alone."

"That's because you're a Dungeon City! It's not fair to compare it to a normal city!"

Whenever the Guild Masters gathered like this, a bragging contest about their respective cities' adventurers would begin.

Dwayne thought it was foolish every time, but since Biodasdal only had a single A-class adventurer party, he took a stance of not participating in the conversation, lest his words be taken as sour grapes.

"It doesn't matter whether there's a dungeon or not. Speaking of which... [White Phoenix] has moved from the city of Fedel, right?"

"What!? Is that story true? If you're talking about [White Phoenix], you mean the adventurer party that was said to be the closest to becoming SS-class!"

"...Tch. Saying unnecessary things. ...It's true. They suddenly blabbered on about moving their base to the Royal Capital, and before I could stop them, they were gone."

"Wahaha! I was wondering why Old Man Shiro was so quiet for once; so that's what happened! Serves you right!"

"I spotted them when they were still C-rank and gave them preferential treatment, and those bastards repay my kindness with betrayal. ...Enough about my city. How is Biodasdal doing? You've at least produced a new A-class adventurer, right?"

Perhaps to avoid having the tables turned on him, he forcefully directed the conversation to Dwayne.

It was the same routine every time, so he was used to it, but he replied with annoyance.

"...None. Well is still the only A-rank."

"Fuohohoho. Did you hear that! Still only one A-class adventurer! And apparently, it's just Old Man Well, who failed to retire."

"You got what was coming to you too, Old Man Shiro, but Biodasdal is on another level! Wouldn't it be better if you just came out of retirement yourself! Wahaha!"

"It's been a running joke until now, but at this rate, it's getting serious. It may be by a technicality, but you are one of the five major cities, so we need you to promote the growth of your adventurers. ...Are there any noteworthy adventurers B-rank or below?"

After the ridicule came the lecture mode.

Dwayne's expression visibly soured, and after clicking his tongue, he listed his noteworthy adventurers.

"[Workaholics], [Level Knife], and the solo adventurer, Aoi. I expect these to rise to A-rank."

"I've never heard of the first two parties. I've only heard of Aoi."

"A solo B-rank is rare, after all! But solo adventurers are usually pretty crazy, right? Does she have a difficult personality?"

"No, I don't think so."

"Hoh. She's a young woman, so if you'd like, I could let her join [Crimson Rose]. It'd be poaching, but ask that Aoi girl for me! Wahaha!"

The irritation continued to build, fueled by his needlessly loud laugh and his every irritating word.

Because of that, Dwayne ended up saying a name he shouldn't have.

"I can put in a word, but the chances of her transferring are zero. Aoi is desperate to join Graham-san's party right now."

"Graham... san? Who's that? Do you know him, Lunette?"

"No, I've never heard of him. Dwayne-san, who is this Graham?"

At that question, a heavy silence fell.

Even though he was told that he shouldn't stand out, he blurted it out without thinking, and now he couldn't stop panicking.

"...You were the one who brought him up, so why don't you answer! ...It's probably just some fictional character you blurted out, or some small fry adventurer—"

"He's no small fry! If you insult Graham-san again, I'll cut you down."

Dwayne slammed the desk hard enough to break it and threatened with genuine killing intent.

From his beet-red face, everyone in the room sensed that he was not joking.

"Please calm down. What's gotten into you all of a sudden?"

"............Sorry. I just got a little heated."

"Don't just snap like that. It's scary. ...So, who is he really? This Graham-san."

...Now that it had come to this, the situation wouldn't settle down unless he gave at least a brief explanation.

Thinking only of satisfying their curiosity while being careful not to cause any trouble for Graham-san, Dwayne decided to explain.
