Interlude 9
Bane, Waiting Impatiently
Translator : PolterGlast
Since receiving the
name Bane from Graham-sama, my world has expanded all at once.
I want him to see my
evolved form as soon as possible, but there is no sign of Graham-sama
appearing.
"Should I go to
see Graham-sama myself...? I should probably report what's happened to this
body, so it might be better to go and see him in person!"
I tried saying it out
loud as if to convince myself, but the memory of Graham-sama telling me not to
come to the city flashed back, and I stopped myself.
It's been a constant
cycle of this recently. I want him to come right now—but my wish does not reach
him, and he does not show his face.
As I was feeling down,
a Ghost Wizard appeared, looking flustered.
Flustered... does that
mean there's a high probability that Graham-sama has come?
Though I was dejected
just a few seconds ago, I quickly changed my mood and eagerly questioned the
Ghost Wizard.
"Has Graham-sama
come!?"
"N-no, he has
not. However, an incredible monster has appeared on the old abandoned
road!"
"...Haaah, so
it's not him. An incredible monster...? Is it a Berserker Bear or a Gold
Golem?"
Just hearing that it
wasn't Graham-sama made my excitement plummet, and I lost all motivation. But
if it's a Berserker Bear or a Gold Golem, I can be of use.
Rethinking this, I
returned the Ghost Wizard's question.
"It is neither...
but it is a monster even greater than those! An executive of the Demon Lord's
army has arrived!"
An executive of the
Demon Lord's army.
Hearing those words, I
could feel my sunken excitement begin to rise.
My reputation will
rise higher if I defeat this executive of the Demon Lord's army than if I
defeat a Berserker Bear or a Gold Golem.
There's no better
opportunity than this. Even if I don't fight him here, I at least want to get
some information.
"An executive of
the Demon Lord's army, you say. In that case, I'd like to meet him once. The
wanted man who is said to have created the Flame Ogre, the Berserker Bear, and
the Gold Golem. If he is an enemy of Graham-sama, then I will finish him with
my own hands."
"He is waiting at
the entrance of the old abandoned road. Is it alright for you to go
there?"
"Of course.
[Teleportation]."
I used teleportation
magic and instantly moved to the entrance of the old abandoned road.
This spell is another
one I acquired after being named by Graham-sama; it allows for instantaneous
travel by consuming a large amount of magic power.
When I teleported to
the entrance of the old abandoned road, waiting there with my undead minions
was—a Demonkin.
At a glance, he looks
just like a human, but the crest-like marking on his forehead is a
characteristic of a Demonkin.
This Demonkin was
bare-chested, a getup that seemed to show off his well-trained muscles.
His magic power was
also immense; if it were me before I met Graham-sama, I would have surrendered
immediately.
"Thank you for
taking the trouble to come. My name is Bane, and I am the master of this old
abandoned road."
"Bane, huh.
Unlike the other masters, you've got a name. And the pressure you're giving off
is on a different level."
"May I ask your
name? Or do you not have one?"
"Don't get cheeky
with your words, you mere undead. My name is Borfly. I serve as an executive in
the Demon Lord's army. I came to make you an offer to join us under our
banner."
Hmm, his attitude and
his words are foul.
He doesn't have enough
power to reach my level, let alone Graham-sama's, yet he has the nerve to tell
me to become his subordinate. How amusing.
"...What are you
grinning at?"
"First, I will
not become your subordinate. I have no interest in the Demon Lord's army.
However... let's see. If you were to grovel before me, I might let you become
my minion. What will you do?"
At my proposal, a vein
popped on the temple of the Demonkin who called himself Borfly.
The killing intent he
must have been suppressing began to leak out, and my minions nearby started to
tremble.
"A minion to an
undead...? That's not a funny joke. Surely you're not getting complacent,
thinking you can't die because you're already undead?"
"Oh, no, no. I
just recently had my overinflated ego shattered to pieces, so I hold no such
arrogant thoughts. —However, Borfly-san. The one thing that is absolutely
impossible is for me to be killed by you."
"That's the kind
of thinking I'm saying is completely condescending! Just because you're strong
around here, you're looking down on the world too much—undead! [Rampage Magic
Circle (Magic Meltdown)]!"
After shouting that,
countless magic circles appeared in the air.
I can't tell what kind
of magic it is from the circles, but I'm confident I can handle whatever he
throws at me.
"[Strength Boost
(Boost Power)] [Agility Boost (Haste)] [Durability Boost (Protect)] [All-Stats
Boost (Full Potential)]"
From what I could hear
of the chants, they were all physical enhancement spells.
He had a lot of magic
power, so I was looking forward to seeing what kind of magic he would use, but
it seems he was a muscle-brain, just as he looked. A bit of a disappointment.
If he had attacked
with both magic and close-quarters combat, I think I would have enjoyed it a
little.
Feeling disappointed
from the bottom of my heart, I activated my own magic since he had initiated
the attack.
"[Inferno
Napalm]."
I spent all my
remaining magic power and unleashed the spell at the approaching Borfly.
The next moment—a
massive, pitch-black flame rose from where Borfly had been standing, and
instantly incinerated the surrounding trees along with him.
The trees caught in
the magic were turned to charcoal in an instant, and of Borfly, who had been at
the center, not even a speck remained.
No matter how much you
enhance your body, you are powerless before overwhelming magic.
I can't stop laughing
at the fact that I've obtained enough power to finish off even an executive of
the Demon Lord's army in a single blow.
...However, all of
this power belongs to Graham-sama.
I strongly remind
myself of that one fact, and in the face of this overwhelming power, my loyalty
grows stronger.
Then, I wonder if it
was really okay to have erased him without a trace, but... what's done is done.
I'll report everything
to Graham-sama—I just wish he would come to see me soon.
Circling back to his
initial feelings, Bane continued to wait earnestly at the old abandoned road for
Graham to arrive.
