Chapter 194
Introducing the Old Abandoned Road
Translator : PolterGlast
The moment we
entered the old abandoned road, Veronica and Mona stopped in
their tracks. The atmosphere here is the worst, and they must have felt some
kind of bad premonition.
"I might... not
want to go any further."
"Me neither. I
have a terribly bad feeling about this."
"It's fine. If
anything happens, I'll protect you, and the guys ahead aren't bad people."
"Really? I'm
trusting your words, Graham."
"You can trust
me. I absolutely won't let anything happen."
Bane, Aka,
and Yoru had completely erased their presences, but as expected of
top-rank adventurers. It seemed they had sniffed out an indescribable,
unpleasant feeling.
Guiding the two
whose steps had suddenly grown heavy, we arrived at the mansion deep within the
old abandoned road. There was no Ghost Wizard to welcome us today, but
that was probably because Veronica and Mona were present.
I think they were
being considerate so as not to startle them. The three of them—Bane, Aka,
and Yoru—still have a faint monster-like feel, but the Ghost Wizard
is a complete monster. If it suddenly appeared, Veronica and Mona
would definitely panic. Feeling grateful for the monsters' consideration, we
entered the mansion.
"To think there's
a beautiful mansion at the end of such an unused abandoned road... it's
surprising."
"I sense a
terribly bad presence from this mansion, and it's so creepy I'm scared to go
in."
"It's really
fine. ...Wait here for a moment. Bane, are you there? Come out
slowly."
Since the two of
them refused to move from the mansion's entrance, I decided to call Bane.
Hearing my voice, Bane slowly emerged from the back of the mansion and
dropped to one knee before me.
"Graham-sama,
I have been expecting you."
"...Eh!? Who is
this person? A member of the Demon Race?"
"This is Bane,
the monster who managed this old abandoned road. After I punished him, he
turned over a new leaf and is now striving to improve the security of the
surrounding area."
"This person is
a monster, and he's obeying you, Graham-san? I can't understand making a
monster obey you without even being a Beast Tamer or a Monster Master, but to begin with, having
such a powerful monster obey you makes no sense!"
They still didn't
seem to have fully swallowed the situation, but since it was a fact that Bane
was obeying me, they had no choice but to believe it. Seeing is believing, so I
brought them here without explaining much, but perhaps I should have explained
the circumstances a bit more.
"I am by no
means a powerful monster. If I appear powerful, it is because Graham-sama
granted me his power."
"Saying he
'granted you power' doesn't make sense either. Is Graham a Demon King or something?"
"I'm no Demon
King. It seems monsters become stronger when given a name, and when I named
him, he just got stronger on his own."
"My head feels
like it's going to burst from information overload. For now, I'm going to stop
thinking entirely."
"Me too. I will
leave fully understanding this for another time."
"I'd appreciate
it if you did. Anyway, Bane. I want them to meet the Wyvern
child. Is it here?"
"Yes. Of
course. Aka and Yoru are amusing it in the reception room, so
please come up."
Taking the
bewildered two with me, we entered the reception room in the back. The room was
quite a mess, and I could immediately tell that Aka and Yoru were
being run ragged by the Red Wyvern child.
"Graham-sama,
thank you for coming!"
"The Red
Wyvern is doing well! ...Perhaps a little too well, though."
"It certainly
seems that way. But I'm glad it's living happily."
The Red Wyvern
child charged at me the moment it saw my figure. When I saw it the other day,
the balance between its body and wings was poor, giving it a jumping ability
that masqueraded as flight, but it seemed to have become capable of true
flight, soaring through the air to reach me.
"Whoa. It
really is a Dragon child. ...But its body is black, huh."
"The Dragon
we defeated was burning red, after all. Just looking at it, it's hard to
believe they are parent and child."
"It's probably
just that it takes after its father. Though there is a possibility that it's a
completely unrelated egg."
However, considering
that it continued to protect the egg even after becoming a Dragon Zombie,
I think it's unmistakably the Red Wyvern's child.
"Even a Dragon
is cute when it's a child. It seems attached to you, Graham-san, so I
can't view this as a subjugation target."
"Me too. I
didn't think it would be this cute."
"I wanted to
show this Wyvern child to you two. You cooperated with me, and I felt
guilty keeping it a secret."
Veronica and Mona
were petting the Wyvern child that had lunged at me, and the Wyvern
child narrowed its eyes in apparent pleasure. I truly just pray that its
temperament doesn't turn rough as it grows.
"Graham.
Aren't you going to give this child a name?"
"I won't. I
just told you, right? Giving a monster a name makes it stronger."
"Is there some
problem if this child gets stronger?"
"For example,
if it grows up and its temperament turns rough, it would be a problem if it
were strong enough to destroy a whole city, right?"
"Ah... that
might indeed be scary. But looking at this child, I don't think there's any
need to worry."
" It is also
troubling not knowing what to call it. I would like you to give it a name
someday as well."
I feel the same way
about wanting to give it a name. If it weren't for the weird restriction of it
getting stronger, I would have casually named it too.
However, if it truly is our ally, there's no problem even if it gets stronger. When the time is right, it might be fine to give this Red Wyvern child a name.
