Side Story 3

Current Status Title:
Wild Child
"Wild child, I
wonder what it really means?"
"Don't ask me, I
have no idea."
It sounded quite
humiliating, but it's so convenient that I use "wild child" quite
often. While leaping between trees, something within me feels like it's about
to awaken. I have several titles, and by [Switching] them in [Status], my
abilities change.
"Wild child"
literally improves my athletic ability, and there are other titles that assist
my Illusion skill. I can only feel the changes myself through trial and error,
but the titles I've figured out are powerful. But sadly, since they're just
titles, I wish I had something I could be more proud of. This sucks.
"I wish it was a
bit more... like, [Resident from Another World]! or [Someone who Knows the
Future]! Or something more... exciting!"
"Would that...
make you happy?"
At least my soul would
tremble. On the surface, I'd be like, "Ew, embarrassing~~," but
inside, my longings in my heart would be stimulated. No matter how favorably I
look at it, "Wild Child" and "Foolish Liar" sound like they
have some malice in them. There must have been better names. Though, I don't
know who's giving them. Could it be the announcement voice?
"Normal humans
can't even see statuses in the first place. I think it's pretty useful. You can
even see what skills you have, right? There are probably guys who'd kill for
that."
"Hmm..."
It's like being able
to grasp your own abilities and talents. I had thought they were all rather
subtle skills, but even so, they had been useful in a pinch when they
accumulated. If I hadn't had them, Lotus wouldn't be standing next to me like
this, and I wouldn't have met Ichi and the others. Indeed, I changed my
internal evaluation. Without them, I would have been done for.
"Gratitude...
yeah, I guess I feel grateful. Oh, Lotus, you can eat that grass."
"Oh.
Seriously?"
I had seen it with my
Appraisal skill, so there was no mistake. I confirmed that the display read: 【It's just grass growing around here, but it's delicious】. Is this a grade school book report? Be a little more
thorough. At least write the official name.
Perhaps because I had
shared my magic power with Lotus, some of my skills had disappeared, but the
first one to revive was the Fishing skill. Maybe I have a talent for fishing.
With the fishing rod made by Lotus, who was much more skillful than me, I enthusiastically
reeled in a fish and decided to serve it with 【It's just grass growing around here, but it's
delicious】 as a side dish. I
gave a fish to a monster that happened to come by, and as if it were a trade,
it breathed a roaring flame from its mouth. Hmm, I've seen this scene somewhere
before.
I held up the
perfectly grilled, juicy fish dripping with oil on a skewer and poured the
water given to me by Ichi and the others into my water bottle. I took a gulp.
"Delicious! More!" I felt like a drunk even though I wasn't. Whei.
You can eat anything, but fish is delicious! Juicy! Ichi and the others were
also big fans.
Watching this, Lotus
groaned, "Hmm..." and started working on making the next skewer. I
had learned that Lotus was surprisingly skillful during our travels together.
"You guys... are
surprisingly good at survival."
"It's great not
having to look for water, isn't it?"
"No, that's not
what I meant... well, never mind."
I refrained from
mentioning where the water was coming from, so I'll skip that part. I could
hear Ichi and the others chattering behind me, "Is it Nii's turn today~~?
San is good tooooo. We'll make delicious slime water~~!!" so I couldn't
skip it at all.
"But you know,
it's different when Lotus is around. The sense of stability is different."
"I wonder about
that."
I don't have to go to
sleep trembling, wondering if someone will find us. I don't have to wipe away
the tears that spill out on their own because I can't reach the places I want
to go. When I get scared, Lotus is right next to me if I just glance over.
Unlike me, who walks through the forest somewhat aimlessly, he has experience.
Of course, I can't rely on him completely, but Lotus knows things I don't, and
I know things Lotus doesn't.
"We can go
anywhere we want, right?"
Of course, to be
honest, there are places where we can't go, but it's not like when I fled from
the village adults, desperately squeezing my body through a single entrance to
somehow get through.
After fleeing the city
of Volvect, we decided to lie low in the forest for a while to hide. I also
needed time to calmly organize information. But maybe it's about time to move
on. "Yeah," I thought, eating the fish. The fragrant smell made my
insides feel warm and cozy.
"We need a goal
after all, right? Even though we haven't decided on a destination. What should
we do?"
"Whatever, but
there's a point to that."
"Well, then,
let's make Lotus a delicious stew. It's been quite a while since we last ate at
Harapeko-tei. Isn't he starting to miss those melt-in-your-mouth carrots?"
"Seriously?
That'd be great."
"Nah, just
kidding."
"Seriously?"
It's hard to tell
because his expression doesn't change much, but he seems quite disappointed.
How much does he like it? I can already picture Sutra-san getting angry at him
for always eating the same thing. "Okay, then stew is the second choice.
The first choice is to find even more delicious and various things." It
would have been enough if the bread for tomorrow was delicious. That's what I
thought when I decided to live in the city of Volvect, but before I knew it, I
was craving the next enjoyment. Humans are greedy. I'm a demon, though.
"This fish is
delicious enough, though," Lotus said, his lips slightly curving upward. I
was glad that he was enjoying himself. If he smiled, that was enough.
