Chapter 83
The True Joy of the Journey
Translator : PolterGlast
After being rocked by
the carriage for about half a day, with occasional breaks, we arrived at our
first stopover point, Renge.
"Ugh... we
finally made it. It swayed more than I expected, so I feel a little sick, and
my butt hurts like crazy..."
"Yeah, it was
about three times less comfortable than I had imagined."
"You think so? I
thought it was pretty easy!"
"I arranged for
the highest-class carriage, but since it was pulled by a Desert Horse, we were
going pretty fast. It might have been tough for those of you who aren't used to
riding in vehicles."
Would it have been
more comfortable with a normal horse?
But you can't see
outside from inside the carriage, and I'd hate for it to take a long time, too.
Using a carriage for
the first time has allowed me to reconfirm that my own two feet are the best
way to travel.
"In any case,
good work, everyone. We leave tomorrow morning, so until then, you're free to
do as you please. I've booked an inn called 'Doldaam,' so please sleep
there."
"Ooh, free time!
It's still evening, so let's go look around the town!"
"Sounds great!
Let's find a delicious-looking restaurant and have dinner there! We skipped
lunch, so I'm starving!"
This kind of
conversation is the real pleasure of traveling with comrades.
It's my first time
experiencing this, and I'm more excited than I thought I'd be.
"How about you
join us, Guild Master? Food is always better when you eat it with a big group,
right?"
"I'd love to,
but... I have a lot to do, so it's difficult. I have to talk to tomorrow's
coachman, and after that, prepare documents for the conference. ...Ah, it's
making me want to go back to being an adventurer."
The Guild Master
muttered that with a vacant look in his eyes.
As always, he looks like
he's having a tough time. I definitely don't want to become a Guild Master.
"That's... a
shame. Good luck with your work."
"I'll pay for all
the expenses later, so you guys just enjoy yourselves. Well then, I'll be on my
way."
The Guild Master's back
exuded a sense of sorrow as he walked away, and I couldn't help but look at him
with pity.
"Somehow... I
feel bad for him! I'm definitely never getting a job at the guild!"
"I think being a
guild employee is a good job. ...I think it's just the Guild Master who has it
rough."
"Well, let's just
enjoy ourselves. We can tell the Guild Master all about it later."
"...Doesn't that
sound like you're just rubbing it in?"
I didn't reply to
Aoi's comment, and instead, I switched gears and we set out into the town of
Renge.
The town of Renge is
smaller than Biodasdal, but it's rich with street stalls, and just walking down
the main street, the smells alone are enough to make you hungry.
It would be nice to
grab a quick bite, but there's nothing new on the menus, so we resist and look
for a delicious-looking restaurant.
"Hmm... I guess
there are two candidates? The grilled meat restaurant on the main street, or
the curry shop that was off the main street."
"The safe bet is
the grilled meat! But... that curry shop. It was in a weird place, but there
was a line, wasn't there?"
"There was a
line, even at this time of day. And more than anything, the smell was
intense."
I haven't eaten much
curry myself, only once when Ginia invited me.
It was super spicy, so
I didn't really get into it, but... I have a desire to try the curry here.
"I vote for the
curry shop! Since we're here, I want to try it!"
"I'd like curry
too. How about you, Graham-san?"
"I'm good with
curry. The fact that it seems like something we can only eat in the town of
Renge is a big plus."
"Then let's go to
the curry shop!"
It was a unanimous
decision for the curry shop. We got in line and waited for our turn.
Even while waiting,
the stimulating aroma of spices tickled my nostrils, and just as my mouth was
in the mood for curry, we were shown inside.
"It feels like a
foreign country! And it looks like there's only one thing on the menu!"
"It seems you can
choose the spice level, and whether you want rice or naan."
The only thing on the
menu was the original curry set, a very bold menu setup.
The fact that it's
still popular suggests that it must be incredibly delicious.
"I'll have normal
spice level, and naan. What about you two?"
"I'll have the
same!"
"I'll have super
spicy and naan."
Once we decided, we
told the waiter and waited for our food to arrive.
And what was brought
to us was... a curry plate that exuded a violent aroma.
"It looks so
good! The naan is freshly baked, too!"
"And the drink is
lassi! This has all the signs of being a big winner!"
"Let's dig in.
Let's eat."
After saying our
thanks for the meal, I tore off a piece of naan with my hands, dipped it in the
curry, and tossed it into my mouth.
—W-wow, this is good!
It was delicious just
from the smell, but the taste is also exceptionally good!
The spiciness is just
right, and the many spices fill my nose, making both my sense of taste and
smell happy.
The naan is also
outstandingly delicious, and I can tell it was made to go with this curry.
And this lassi, which
you drink when your mouth starts to tingle.
The balance of
sweetness is just right, and it goes perfectly with the curry.
Everything was
perfect... We hit the jackpot on the very first day of our trip, and so our
first day ended in a state of great satisfaction.
