Chapter 19
Crushed
Translator : PolterGlast
I could have jumped in
and destroyed the Golems before those two were killed, but now that I know
they're the [Unbearable God Cult], I can't help them carelessly.
First, I have to make
them promise not to attack anyone and to retreat immediately.
"Can I have a
word?"
"Who are you!? I
don't have time for pointless talk—wait, who are you people!? Where did you
spring from!? ...Could you be the adventurers who came to capture us? No, but
they should be searching the south..."
"We noticed you
were being attacked and came to help, but you're the [Unbearable God Cult],
aren't you?"
"So you are
pursuers...! Attacked by Golems and half-destroyed, only to be found by
pursuing adventurers. ...Has our entire operation failed?"
"Sorry to
interrupt your little pity party, but I only have one condition. In exchange
for my help, you will not lay a hand on anyone and will withdraw to the royal
capital. If you can make that promise, I'll save you from the Golems."
It seemed he never
expected an offer of help, as the man who appeared to be the leader was staring
blankly with his mouth agape.
People are being
attacked as we speak, so I want him to promise quickly, but I can't help him
unless he replies.
"Help... us? I
don't understand what you're saying."
"It means exactly
what I said. If you withdraw, I'll save you from the Golems and let you go. I'd
prefer it if you left the [Unbearable God Cult] or turned yourselves in, but I
won't demand that much."
"Y-you'll let us
go if we just withdraw? Then please help us! I promise we'll withdraw!"
"Alright. Don't
break your promise. I don't like getting rough with people."
After saying that to
the leader-like man who was clinging to my leg and begging desperately, I
turned to face the Golems.
I'm ready to unleash
magic at any moment, so I'll proceed as planned and cut them down with my
katana.
This time, instead of
using a flying slash, I'll cut them directly.
Even if it's just a
normal Golem, a flying slash probably wouldn't be able to cut through it.
I drew my katana and
slowly approached while pointing it at the Golems.
The Golems had been
chasing the fleeing members of the [Unbearable God Cult], but the moment they
noticed me approaching, they turned and raised their fists towards me.
"H-hey! Physical
attacks don't work on Golems!! D-don't tell me you can't use magic!? --Damn it!
For all your big talk, you're just some small fry who doesn't even know that!
My begging was for nothing!!"
The leader-like man
started spewing insults behind me, but I'll overlook his verbal abuse.
...Though if he breaks
the promise we just made, I won't show any mercy.
With that thought in
mind, I took aim at the Golem as the distance between us closed.
I could see a green
light leaking from the gaps in the rocks that formed the Golem's body.
That's the Golem's
core. If I cut that down, the Golem will die.
It's similar to a
Slime in that sense; as long as the core is destroyed, it will stop moving, no
matter how intact its exterior is.
Well, to test my own
strength, I'll use the first one for a test cut.
Unlike the other
monsters I've fought so far, Golems are a monster I have experience fighting
even when I had both arms.
This should be a good
way to judge the difference between when I had both arms and now, with only
one.
The moment I stepped
into its range—the Golem's fist came flying.
"Graham-san!"
Ginia's worried voice
reached my ears, but instead of replying, I showed her there was nothing to
worry about by cutting the Golem's arm.
Before the swinging
fist could reach me, I made twenty vertical and thirty horizontal cuts. The
moment the Golem's fist touched me, its left arm crumbled and fell apart.
If you couldn't see my
sword's movements, it would have looked as though the Golem's own arm had
broken the instant it punched.
It seemed the Golem
that threw the punch felt the same way; despite being an inorganic monster, it
showed a confused attitude.
As if it had
encountered something unknown, one of the Golems began to back away slowly.
But, as expected of an
emotionless Golem, it quickly recovered and this time came at me with a kick
from its right leg—but I diced its right leg into pieces in the same way.
Once again, the
kicking leg shattered the moment it touched me, and the Golem, now with only
its left leg, lost its balance and fell over.
I looked down on the
Golem, and after confirming it had lost its ability to fight, I sliced its
torso in half, right through where the core was hidden.
The Golem, its core
destroyed, became a mere pile of rubble, and I turned my katana towards the
remaining two Golems.
Up until now, I had
the objective of a test cut, but I've tested what I needed to. I can dispose of
the remaining two in an instant.
I sheathed my sword
for a moment, and as the approaching Golem entered my range—I cut its core in
two with a quick-draw slash.
For the last one, I
walked straight towards it, and as it raised its fist, I slipped into its guard
and thrust my sword into its core.
In the blink of an
eye, a pile of rubble from three Golems was created, and a great cheer went up
from the people around who had been watching my fight.
