[WN] Shut-In : Chapter 138

Chapter 138

The Violence of LV

Translator : PolterGlast

When I delivered Priola's magic tools to the Empire where Emilia was, we ended up having our customary tea party. I also had some things I wanted to discuss this time, so the timing was just right.

I see, so that's what was happening over there...

Yeah, it seems the current situation with the demons is far more dangerous than we imagined.

Ah, by the way, the treat we are eating right now is a new product recently released at Jin's Patisserie. It seems one of my classmates finally succeeded in developing fresh whipped cream. Thanks to that, their popularity is skyrocketing, and their reputation has spread wide enough to reach even the Emperor. They've had such massive lines day after day that there's talk of a second branch opening soon... but anyway, never mind that for now.

I needed to share the information regarding the demons with Emilia, whose territory shares the largest border with the Demon Territories and who is currently leading the human alliance against them. Depending on how the situation develops, there is a possibility that the number of demons slipping in will increase, so Priola's magic tools are exactly what we need right now. The Empire apparently has ways to distinguish them to an extent, but unlike the ones made in the Rusara Territory, they aren't exactly foolproof.

But I see, so the reason for the recent sudden changes was a drama surrounding the changing of the Demon Lord... The circumstances over there might not be so different from humans after all.

True, when you put it like that, they're dealing with assassinations and political dramas.

Emilia's complexion darkened upon hearing the story about their side from Lirica. It's perfectly understandable she'd make such a face, considering the demons they had managed to fend off until now would soon attack under strict leadership.

In that case, the battle intensifying into a full-scale war might not be too far off...

Yeah. Of course, I plan to tell you immediately if anything happens, but I need you to make preparations for it too, Emilia.

Naturally. But if that's the case, we might have to change how we train our soldiers. Even if it's a bit reckless, I might have to make them clear dungeons to raise their LV...

Apparently, there is a rule that Imperial soldiers must experience a certain amount of combat with monsters in addition to their regular training before becoming full-fledged privates. She was racking her brain over whether they should raise that standard moving forward to force them to level up and improve their quality.

I see. It makes sense when you think about it, but just doing regular training isn't enough?

Yes. I hear it didn't exist in the world you came from, Masaru, but here in Aristella, we have LVs.

To raise strong soldiers, Emilia says that actual combat experience is necessary in addition to solid training and military discipline. Because the parameter called LV—which makes you stronger as it increases—exists, there are many cases where things won't even get off the ground unless you raise it. No matter how skilled a soldier becomes with a sword, an LV 1 soldier cannot defeat an LV 20 Orc. I was just an exception because my skill levels broke through the heavens before my LV went up; fundamentally, all the strong people in this world have high LVs. Of course, since I manage most of my battles through the brute force of my LV difference, I understand just how important LV is.

As expected, are dungeons the most efficient way to raise LV?

Yes, they are, but... are you planning to raise your LV even more, Masaru?

No, due to the flow of things, I ended up taking the Demon Lord's daughter as my disciple. I was wondering how I could make her stronger.

—That's the first I'm hearing of this!? Is that really going to be okay!? If you make her stronger and she goes on a rampage in the Empire, I will legitimately cry, you know!

Emilia leaned forward forcefully, looking like she was about to grab me. I-I think it'll be fine... probably. At my answer, Emilia broke down crying on the table. As I slightly regretted taking this on without a solid plan, the butler, Torakura-san, offered her a handkerchief in the blink of an eye.

Sniff... Well, if you thought it was a good idea, Masaru, it should be fine. Anyway, we were talking about raising LVs.

According to what Emilia explained while her nose was red, there are two ways to rapidly raise one's LV right now. —Dungeons, or war.

First is the dungeon, which is easy for me to understand since I've actually experienced it. Because monsters spawn infinitely, you can earn as much experience points as you want as long as your HP and MP hold out. Since the strength of the monsters changes with each floor, it's easy to gauge your current abilities, and it seems that an efficient training method has been perfectly established in the dungeons managed by the Empire.

And the second method is the war that is still continuing on the front lines even now. This is the method Mitsukawa-kun used to raise his LV.

It seems that the experience points needed to raise your LV can come from any living creature. Apparently, your LV goes up even if you kill other humans, and in the past, there were even militant nations that would wage war on neighboring countries just for that purpose.

If we're going to do power leveling, I feel like a dungeon would be better. Unexpected things are less likely to happen, too.

Wait, actually, is power leveling even possible in Aristella in the first place? How does the acquisition and distribution of experience points work in this world anyway? Is it a "last attack" system where the one who deals the finishing blow gets everything, or is it distributed proportionally based on contribution in battle...? Since I've been fighting all alone, I don't know any of these basics. By the way, because loners like me have no one to teach them, there are quite a few things that everyone else knows but we don't. It's a sad piece of trivia that no one needed to know...

Huh, so it's a distribution type... That drops the efficiency a bit.

According to Emilia's story, the acquisition of experience points is calculated based on your contribution towards defeating the target. Because buffers and healers also accumulate experience points, if you form a party, you won't end up with a widening LV gap between the attackers and the rest, leading to getting banished from the party... or so it seems.

When considering how to make Lirica stronger, I don't know which method is better. The reason I reached such a high LV was because I forcibly massacred monsters with the brute force of my magic while facing a strict deadline to clear the dungeon. But perhaps, if it's an environment where you can mow down massive amounts of enemies like in a Musou game, the battlefield might actually be more efficient for experience points.

I haven't really gotten a proper look at the battlefields in this world, after all. Even when I went to the fort where Mitsukawa-kun was stationed, I didn't stick around to observe and just came straight back. For a while now, I've been running around frantically here and there, enough that I'd praise myself for working hard.

In that case, I'll try visiting the battlefield tomorrow for starters. Could you tell me where war have broken out in the Empire or Kingdom?

You make it sound like a sightseeing trip... Well, for you, Masaru, I suppose anywhere is like a stroll in the park.

Looking exasperated, Emilia spread out a map and showed me the locations that had turned into battlefields. It seems there's currently a brief lull, and no large-scale wars are ongoing.

(Well, in Lirica's case, we can't let Odd catch wind of her existence, so various countermeasures will be necessary... but given the nature of demons, I feel like there's a way to make it work.)

Demons have a nature of obeying stronger demons. If Lirica becomes strong... I wonder if she can bring the demons following Odd over to her side? If she gets to the point where she can fight Odd, we could have her train crazily in a dungeon, then go unmatched on the battlefield, steadily increasing her allies... If we could do something like that, it would be ideal.

Oops, is it already this late... Sorry for staying so long, I'll come again.

Mhm, if anything happens, feel free to come tell me without hesitation.

Looking at the clock, it was already past 3:00 PM. I had one more place to go, so it was about time I took my leave. After thanking her and leaving the area, I headed toward my final destination... the massive temple in Grisnia, the headquarters of the Holy Church: the Ode Cathedral—.
