Chapter 110
Smooth Sailing
Translator : PolterGlast
Two days have passed since we brought back the three women
who had been slaves. Because we ensured they were fed properly and I cast Healing
Magic on them while they slept, they have recovered significantly—a sharp
contrast to their debilitated state from two days ago.
"Graham-sama, thank you for the meal today as
well."
"Really, thank you. Thanks to Graham-sama, my
body is completely better."
The woman who appeared to be the eldest bowed deeply the
moment I showed myself. The dark-skinned woman had a straightforward
personality, but her gratitude came through clearly. Incidentally, the youngest one, the Beastman girl, was
currently clinging to my leg.
"Anyway, I'm glad you seem to be doing better. Is there
anything you're having trouble with?"
"Nothing at all. Thank you so much for doing this much
for the likes of us slaves."
"That's good, then. But first, let's introduce
ourselves. We haven't even exchanged names yet."
I didn't know who they heard it from, but all three seemed
to know my name, even though I hadn't introduced myself. To be fair, it hadn't
exactly been a situation where we could converse.
"My name is Graham. I purchased the three of
you, but please rest assured—I have absolutely no intention of treating you
like slaves."
When I said this while introducing myself, the two women
showed surprised expressions. As expected, it seems this is a considerably rare
case.
"You can work us hard, you know? I can declare that
even if Graham-sama were to hit me, I wouldn't hold a grudge."
"I'm not going to hit you. I do intend to have you
work, but I assure you that I will not treat you as slaves."
"............Is it really okay? We aren't just slaves;
we are defective goods with missing body parts. There is a possibility we
cannot perform the work Graham-sama expects."
"If it's about that, I'm the same. I don't have a left
arm either, and I don't intend to ask for the impossible. Besides... please
never call yourself 'defective goods' again."
Those words were far too sad. ...The term 'defective goods'
must have been thrown at them constantly; being the eldest, it was likely
deeply imprinted on her.
"To receive such merciful words... this might be the
first time for me. Graham-sama, thank you truly."
"It's only natural, and not
something to be thanked for. ...Do you three have names? If you do, I want you
to tell me."
When I asked that, the Beastman girl clinging to my leg lightly
pulled the hem of my clothes.
"...Hm? What's wrong?"
"I had a name, but I want Graham-sama to give me
one. ...No good?"
The Beastman girl pleaded while looking up at me. Perhaps it
was a request made because even her name was tied to terrible memories. Patting
her head gently, I decided to give her a name.
"Understood. Your name is—Ria. I want you to go
by Ria from today."
"...Ria. ...Fufu, thank you. I'll treasure
it."
"Can I give names to the two of you as well?"
"Of course. We want Graham-sama to name
us."
"Please do."
"Tricia and Maud. You two go by those
names from today."
I told the eldest woman to call herself Tricia, and
the dark-skinned woman Maud. If they didn't like the names, I intended
to change them immediately, but... Both smiled happily, seeming to like the
names I chose.
"Graham-sama, thank you. From today, I shall
call myself Tricia, and I swear to live for Graham-sama."
"Same here. To not shame the name Maud I
received, I swear to risk my life living for Graham-sama."
"I am grateful for your sentiments, and they make me
happy, but there is no need to put so much pressure on yourselves. You must
have endured great hardship up until now, so for a while, please just enjoy
your lives without worrying about a thing."
They were showing tremendous loyalty, but I just wanted them
to work at the orphanage. If they didn't want to work, I didn't intend to force
them... considering the terrible treatment they had received, I just wanted
them to live happily from now on.
"I'll do my best for Graham-sama too. ...Thank
you really for saving me."
Ria hugged my
leg tightly while saying that. I almost teared up at those too-sad words of
gratitude, but I held it back, thinking there was no way I should be the one
crying.
"I feel the same as Ria. Thank you truly for
saving us."
"If Graham-sama hadn't saved us, we would have
been as good as dead. Graham-sama, really, thank you."
For these past two days, I had constantly asked myself if
what I did was right... but hearing their words of gratitude, I felt from the
bottom of my heart that it was good I saved them. Just as I swore when I
rescued them, I decided once again to continue supporting Ria, Tricia,
and Maud with all my might so that they can eventually feel glad to be
alive.
