The Strange Book Says to Take a
Request at the Guild Again
Translator : PolterGlast
Summary of
the Previous Chapters.
Until he turned six, Ashley was confined in a tower
and raised by Jii and his wet nurse. When he was allowed to leave the
tower, he met Atomina and Georg, and while others hated him as an
abomination, only they cherished and protected Ashley as their younger
brother.
For Ashley, the two were the very light of the
Imperial Family. To him, who was raised hidden away, they were dazzling
existences. That day, Ashley managed to bring the match with Georg,
against whom he had always lost, to a draw.
Georg, who
insisted it was Ashley's victory, and Atomina gifted him a new Steel
Shovel.
After that, Ashley left the palace on an errand for
Imperial Princess Atomina. Visiting the Alchemist Dulin Andvaranaut,
he became acquainted with the petite alchemist
through the request.
However, a man from the State Church appeared at the
shop and threatened Dulin to leave the Imperial Capital if she
valued her life. Furthermore, a stone was thrown in, breaking the shop's glass.
Thereupon, Ashley immediately dashed out of the shop and captured the
culprit in the act. The intimidator from the Church left as soon as the tide
turned against him.
Ashley offered
the money stolen from the captured culprit to Dulin as repair costs for
the glass, and returned to the palace with a pound cake for Atomina in
hand.

5-1 The Strange Tome Says to Accept
a Request at the Guild Again
Before noon the next day, I was finally able to open the
door of the Adventurer's Guild. Ah, of course, I told my sister, Imperial
Princess Atomina, about what the State Church did to Dulin.
The fact that it reached Sister's ears means it will also be
shoved into Brother Georg's ears. Now that the Imperial Family knows of
this situation, the strange faction of the State Church won't be able to
do anything funny to Dulin anymore.
No, either way, this matter involves politics and religion,
so it's beyond my control. Slaughtering that scum called Keter in a
surprise attack, or sneaking into his house and stealing his wealth, would have
to be called excessive retaliation under the current circumstances.
Sister and Brother will protect Dulin. Let's believe
that.
"Yo Shinza, long time no see. Heard you were
shacking up somewhere nice with a woman?"
"You, where do
you even pick up that kind of nonsense?"
In any case. As I walked into the Guild and glanced toward
the reception desk, I realized they had hit on a subtle point—it was sort of
right, but also completely wrong.
"Sister Sigrun looked lonely, gyahahaha!
Hey hey, you lady-killer!"
The usual Adventurers (drunkards) are also encamped
at the bar counter in the back. It doesn't matter, but I've never seen these
guys working even once. It sounds stupid, but I felt a small sense of kinship
with them.
"Yeah, but you better steer clear of her, Firefly Bro. She's a beauty, sure,
but... if you date someone like that, no number of lives will be enough."
Even so, Firefly Bro and Shinza, huh.
Nowadays, this fake name feels much easier and more fitting. Carral has
also left the country. I suppose I'll set the guild as my base of operations
for a while.
"But she is strong. Being that strong, she could
probably distinguish herself and even become an Imperial Knight someday. No, wait..."
"Gyahaha, what are you saying Shinza!
Impossible, impossible, absolutely impossible!"
"Whether it's the Guild Master, an employer, or
whatever, she punches anyone she doesn't like. That's Sister Sigrun for
ya!"
I tried saying it, but it was completely denied, and even I
had to agree. That's right, her valor easily surpasses knights, but she is
completely unsuited for it.
No, it's not just Sigrun. I'm probably like that too.
When I see the weak being oppressed, I can't control myself. I want to help
them immediately. That is not the quality of a person on the side of order.
Zirant brought me
the power and opportunity to execute justice, and I was completely incited by
it. But perhaps, Zirant simply granted
my latent wish that I had held deep down all along.
"So, I doubt this is actually the case, but did you
come just to chat with me today, Shinza? Ah, I don't recommend
hanging out with them. If you accidentally become friends, you'll fall into a
life where all your money disappears into booze."
"Oi wait, what's wrong with that! You just work when
the money runs out!"
"Yeah, yeah! Otherwise, who'd do this kind of job
willingly, idiot!"
Just being inside this guild, their foul mouths seem
contagious. If that happens, I'll probably earn the frowns of Brother Georg,
Sister Atomina, and Jii. I restrained myself just in case, so as
not to be swept away.
"I want to work. Preferably something involving combat.
Let's see, something Sigrun would take."
Unlike the drunkards, the receptionist man does his job
properly. He opened a binder listing requests and started flipping through the
pages.
"Anything else?"
"I'm bad at group action, preferably solo."
"Shinza, you're quite something too. OK, how
about this one?"
It seems he found a suitable one. He placed the binder on
the counter with the page open. Of course, upside down from the customer's
perspective. I have no complaints, don't need consideration, just need to be
able to read it.
— Type: Subjugation Request — Target:
Extermination of Goblin-types — Location: Corin Village — Reward:
1720 Crowns —
"Corin Village...?"
"Yeah, far north of the Imperial Capital—anyway,
a village deep in the mountains. Once you go that far, it's not directly
controlled by the Empire, so the job gets that much riskier."
Goblins, huh.
Targets of the type that overwhelm with numbers. Thinking of them as opponents
to test my skills, I feel like each individual won't provide much of a
challenge, but I haven't fought Goblins in the first place.
"You defeated an Abyss Hound with Sigrun,
right? A Goblin army or whatever, you can handle it. Alright, it's
decided; take this one, Shinza."
"The North, huh. Doesn't seem bad."
However, what is this? One of the drunkards peeked at the
binder from behind me. He smells terribly of alcohol. As soon as he glanced at
the contents, he cursed.
"Oi Shinza, don't be deceived! That's a shitty
request, don't take it!"
"You bastard, just shut up and drink over there!"
A shitty request, apparently. I don't understand even if
told that, but judging from the receptionist's demeanor, it seems to be spot
on.
"Uwah, seriously shitty, shitty. You're a bad guy,
deceiving a rookie who almost trusted you, arranging such a stingy job, that's
cruel, ain't it?"
"Since when did you guys start taking Shinza's
side! Back off, if you have complaints, drink elsewhere!"
Another drunkard joined in, guaranteeing that it was a
shitty request. The receptionist doesn't deny it. Sometimes I thought he was
just teasing, but certainly, right now, the drunkards were taking my side.
"What does that
mean?"
"Look closely, the reward is missing a digit. Corin
Village, that takes 4 days one way, you know?"
"And what you're subjugating is a Goblin horde.
Plus, if they're swarming, it means a big Hobgoblin is leading them.
Listen Shinza, this ain't a job to take solo."
"So that's it. Oh, indeed the reward seems small."
Flipping through the binder without asking, there seemed to
be plenty of other requests with higher rewards. I thought the receptionist man
was a good guy. It seems he does his job much more shrewdly than I felt.
When our eyes met, he laughed without remorse.
"But think about it, Shinza, the village will
give you a big welcome."
"Is that so?"
"Of course. A small hero-sama appearing in a village
that can't even pay properly. Besides, for the reward that can't be paid in
crowns, I'm sure young girls of your type will use their bodies to...?"
"Ah, in other words, there are no idiots other than me
who would take it, is that it?"
I don't know why, but I seem to be misunderstood. The
receptionist put his arm around my shoulder and developed a logic I sort of
understood but sort of didn't. No, I still don't understand, except that you
like women...
"That's right. If anyone takes it, it's either a con
artist intending to deceive the village from the start, or—an idiot like Sigrun."
"So that's how it is."
Indeed, I said I wanted to do a quest Sigrun would
take. He hit that point perfectly. Hearing that only someone like Sigrun
would take it seriously, my interest was piqued conversely. It must be an
exceedingly stingy and hard job...
"Why not do it? Seriously,
you'll be super popular, Shinza. If you're gonna be an adventurer, you
can't call yourself an adventurer unless you experience this once. Rewards
other than money are pretty good to receive, you know?"
"Understood, I'll do it."
Returning the binder to the original page, I showed the
receptionist with my expression that my motive wasn't ulterior. I am a member
of the Imperial Family. As long as I'm fed by the people for free, even a NEET
like me should repay the favor occasionally.
"Oi Shinza! Even though people are being kind to
you! Are you an idiot!"
"Gyahaha, makes sense that Sister took a liking to
him!"
"Alright Shinza, then I'll give you this! Here,
open it!"
There's an old adventurer man who didn't come over here and
was stuck to his booze. He threw me a heavy cloth bag. Looking inside, it was
salt. Unlike the rock salt mined inland, it smelled of the sea.
"Is this much okay?"
"Over here it's just seasoning, but that kind of thing
has quite some value inland. Well, do your best, skilled but worldly-ignorant
rookie-chan."
"Sorry for being ignorant of the world. I'll accept it
gratefully."
Thus, the rookie adventurer Shinza accepted the Goblin
subjugation quest and headed for the frontier land, Corin Village.

In the first place, sometimes Scoops are called Shovels,
and conversely, Shovels are called Scoops. I wonder which is
which1... Zirant, you're too vague; I don't understand
anything from just this...
1Translation Note
The protagonist's confusion ("Which is
which?") stems from a specific Japanese regional debate:
·
People from Tokyo call the big tool
a Shovel and the small one a Scoop. People from Osaka often call the big tool a
Scoop and the small one a Shovel.
·
The JIS Standard: Japanese
Industrial Standards define them by usage: if you put your foot on it, it's a
Shovel. If you use hands only, it's a Scoop.
