Episode 113: Why Don't You Cherish the Present More? (2)

Now that I've decided to fight, the question becomes: which cards should I summon?

Since the summoned cards will affect the capabilities of the cards that drop, I have to choose them carefully...

Kisshouten and Kokuanten each copied three skills, totaling six. That means, for this Trinity Deity, I can potentially obtain nine skills.

The skills copied will be random—I can't manipulate fate to control the outcome. That would defeat the purpose of a trial, wouldn't it?—but I want to choose cards whose resulting skills will be beneficial, regardless of which ones are copied.

First, let's decide on the six cards that will comprise the combat team.

Renge is a definite choice, and Eliza, Yuki, and Mea are also safe picks. For the remaining two... let's go with Dress, who has overcome her [Clumsy] skill, and Myra, who has been powered up by her [Spiritual recurrence]. She also has versatile inborn skills thanks to that and is well-suited for a special type of dungeon boss that copies acquired skills.

That leaves three cards: Suzuka, Audrey ......, and Hesperides.

I took out the Hesperides card and looked at its stats.

[Race] Hesperides

[Combat Power] 600

[Inborn Skills]

Daughters of Twilight: Three nymphs dwelling at the western edge of the world. They are a single entity/card consisting of Aigle, Erytheia, and Hesperethusa. They appear simultaneously as multiple individuals, and their combat power is distributed among them. They are Lost only when all individuals are defeated. Contains Singer, Farmer, and Maid skills.

(Singer: Contains the skills necessary for a singer. Includes Singing, Playing Instruments, Dancing, and Precise Movements.)

(Farmer: Contains the skills necessary for a farmer. Includes cultivation, farming, livestock raising, and collective action.)

(Maid: Contains the skills necessary for a maid. Includes Cooking, Cleaning, Sexual techniques, and Etiquette.)

Garden of the Hesperides: Deploys Hera's orchard, said to be where the Hesperides reside. The Garden of the Hesperides is said to bear golden apples that grant immortality to those who eat them, and is home to the B-rank monster Ladon, who guards them. While the golden apples in this garden do not actually grant immortality, they have a powerful allure that draws in intruders.  The apples temporarily grant those who eat them the 'Knowledge of Survival'. Also, they are very delicious.

High-Level Earth Spirit: An earth spirit close to a low-level earth goddess. Simply by existing, it blesses the earth and promotes plant growth. Contains Terrain Manipulation and Geological Manipulation.

(Terrain Manipulation: Can freely alter the surrounding terrain.)

(Geological Manipulation: Can freely alter the surrounding geology. Can also create small amounts of precious metals and gems from the earth.)

Advanced Auxiliary Magic

[Acquired skills]

Obedience

Intermediate-level Storage: Has an internal space for storing things.  Intermediate-level Storage is approximately ten tatami mats1.

Simple Temple2: By drawing a magic circle on the ground, a simplified temple can be formed on the spot. Within the temple, all stats are improved, continuous recovery is granted, and the output of some skills is enhanced. Divine/holy attribute skills have increased effect.

What I'm hoping for from Hesperides is a copy of [Simple Temple].

[Simple Temple] is an excellent territory/zone-based skill. Even though Hesperides already possesses it, I'd like to have it duplicated on one of my combat-oriented cards, considering I'll most likely never place this card on the front line.

As for the other skills, since higher-level deities likely have [Pride of Deity], it's fine if [Obedience] is copied. And since [Intermediate-level Storage] is a skill that's difficult to obtain despite its usefulness, it wouldn't hurt to copy that as well.

Okay, I'll go with these three, including Hesperides, as the cards to be copied.

"Okay, let's go.”

First, I summoned the cards to be copied, replaced them with the combat team, equipped Eliza with Dress, had Renge invoke Kokuanten, and made Mea use [Spiritual recurrence]… After all the preparations, I was ready to challenge the Boss.

The moment I stepped out of the safe zone and into their space, the enemy immediately began to move, as if they had been waiting for me.

Nemain began summoning her subordinates, Badb started drawing a magic circle on the ground, and Morrigan stood in front of her sisters as the vanguard.

...Looking at them again, these sisters are well-balanced with a vanguard, rear guard, and support.

While considering these things, I had Mea begin summoning a succubus.

 Initially, we observed each other.

The other side's strategy wouldn't be effective until they had more subordinates, and Badb's skills were male-specific, so it was understandable that they weren't moving aggressively.

However, I didn't need to play along.

We were both playing a waiting game, but I decided to make some preemptive moves.

Myra, Basilisk.

Yes!

At my command, Myra transformed into a gigantic serpent with a head resembling a chicken.

[Race] Basilisk (Myra)

[Combat Power] 1060 (MAX!)

[Inborn Skills]

Poison Dragon’s Orb: A poison dragon's heart that generates and stores potent poison and life force.

Poison Dragon Scales: An extremely sturdy dragon's armor. Provides resistance against physical and magical attacks. These scales contain potent poison, which infects those who attack them.

Poison Dragon's Breath: A technique synonymous with dragons. By exhaling magic as a breath, it enhances the range and power of the magic and allows it to be released without chanting. The breath also contains potent poison.

Control Poison with Poison: Can consume and use any and all poisons as sustenance. Enhances the effects of its own poison and recovers through poison. Contains Poison Magic Eyes and Petrification Magic Eyes.

(Poison Magic Eyes: Magic eyes that inflict status abnormalities simply by looking.)

(Petrification Magic Eyes: Magic eyes that inflict status abnormalities simply by looking.)

[Acquired Skills]

Spiritual recurrence

Selfless devotion

Elementary Wizard → Intermediate level wizard (CHANGE!)

Novice maid

Tactics

The Basilisks were a dragon that specialized in poison-based status abnormalities.

Their deadly poison had a superior status ailment effect, partially ignoring resistance, so it could take effect even on those with high resistance.

Basilisks were saturated with this deadly poison, capable of poisoning not only those they attacked, but also those who attacked them.

Furthermore, the skill [Control Poison with Poison] allowed the Basilisks to heal themselves with poison. The poison they produced kept them in a state of continuous recovery, making their life force so robust that they could be considered more formidable than typical dragon species.

On the other hand, their offensive capabilities tend to be lower than those of other dragons, making them endurance fighters who rely on abnormal status effects and vitality to survive.

When appearing alone, they would simply be a stubborn and annoying enemy. However, when paired with other monsters, they would instantly shine, becoming valuable as debuffers... That's the kind of creature they were.

The same applied when they appeared as allies, like now.

Myra twisted her gigantic body, over 40 meters long, and spat a poisonous, dark green breath from her snout.

The breath, perhaps derived from blizzard magic, was laced with ice particles that froze the Dullahans' armor and poisoned the Banshees floating in the air, sending them crashing to the ground.

The Basilisk's breath, however, was not effective enough to take down all the C-ranked Banshees and Dullahans3.

But, if left alone, it would surely reduce the enemy's life force and hinder the increase of their subordinates.

In the meantime, we could steadily increase the number of our own subordinates…

The enemy made a quick decision.

The intimidation from Nemain and the others doubled at once, and the poisoned Dullahans began to move more actively.

They activated their special skill, [Feast of Destruction, Slaughter, and Victory].

One of the Banshees, merged with a Dullahan, swooped down at me from the air.

My shield, Eliza, stood in front of me.

Their swords collided—and Eliza was blown away.

Fortunately, due to the difference in skill, she seemed to have deflected most of the force, but the sight still shocked me.

At the same time, the logical part of my brain quickly calculated the situation.

For the doubled stat boost, let's consider it as an offset to the full-sync combat power increase.

Eliza's combat power is 1680, plus half of Dress's combat power, which is 400, and Dáinsleif, equivalent to 500 combat power.

On the other hand, the opponents are Banshees with a maximum combat power of 760, plus half of the Dullahans' combat power, which is 400… That's a difference of 1420 for each.

Since equipping skills of the same type doesn't stack, this should have been an evenly matched situation.

However, the result was an overwhelming defeat in terms of raw power.

Does this confirm that Nemain has copied [Breakthrough of Limits]?

Even with the copied [Breakthrough of Limits], the fact that we can't defeat endless waves of lowly enemies equipped with full gear... this skill is simply broken, even for a Trinity Deity.

No more playing around. It's time for me to use my trump card too!

Renge!

I felt a silent response to my call.

The two Renge, Kisshouten and Kokuanten... were enveloped in light and merged into one.

At the same time, the air—no, space itself—began to tremble.

Sensing an unusually strange aura, the goddesses stared with vigilance.

Soon, as if emerging from a cocoon, a stunning maiden appeared.

Her raven hair, streaked with crimson, cascaded down her back. Her form was lush and feminine, with breasts that spoke of motherhood. Her face, a masterpiece of nature, bore a striking resemblance to her daughter, Kisshouten.

Her heavenly attire discarded, Kishimojin appeared as a goddess whose beauty was almost sinful—— but her flawless features contorted in a mix of pain— yet it was also tinged with an almost erotic allure.

U......kuh......!

What's wrong, Renge?!

........... Hu~u. No… it's nothing. I just... almost got a little drunk.

That's...

Are you sure you're okay ......?

More importantly, hurry up and give your order. Don't get all worked up over my nice body.

I'm not getting worked up.

‘It seems like she's still the usual Renge,’ I thought to myself as I gave the order,

... Devour them all, Renge.

Roger....!

Renge's obsidian eyes turned golden and split vertically, like a beast's.

Skill—[Mirror Image Divinity: Ferocious Spirit of Kishimojin]

A manifestation of Kishimojin's ferocious spirit, this power embodied her dark past of abducting and devouring other people's children to nourish her own.

The effect was to devour all the subordinates present in the field, regardless of whether they were friend or foe.

In all directions, everywhere, a tear in space—or rather, a 'mouth'—appeared.

The 'mouths' sucked in the subordinates with irresistible force, chewed them up, swallowed them, and then vanished.

The area became desolate at once, as the subordinates of both sides had been wiped out.

But that was only temporary. The skill [Mirror Image Divinity: Ferocious Spirit of Kishimojin] does not have the effect of blocking the summoning of new subordinates, unlike the skill of Selene and her companions.

And the skill to devour subordinates was a trump card that could only be used once a day.

Therefore, the outcome of the battle had to be decided well in advance.

Skill—[Mirror Image Divinity: Gentle Spirit of Kishimojin]

This skill had the power to bring forth her own offspring (subordinates), nourished by the devoured children (subordinates).

A skill that permitted the summoning of B-rank monsters, Rakshasa and Rakshasi4, in direct proportion to the number of familiars offered as sacrifices.

Perhaps because the summoning process involved a sacrifice, the subordinates that were spawned were also created in a somewhat special way.

[Race] Rakshasa

[Combat Power] 3600(MAX!)

[Inborn Skills]

• Walker of the Asura5 Path: Residents of the Path of Asura, who spend their days in battles that never end. Madness and battle are their daily lives, so they do not fear death, do not go berserk even in a frenzied state, and can voluntarily cancel their frenzied state. Contains Warrior and Insanity-clad skills.

(Insanity-clad: All stats are tripled in exchange for going berserk and gradually losing life force until the battle ends.)

• Pair of Two

• Mutual Destruction: If defeated, they inflict damage proportional to the damage they received and their combat power on the entity that dealt the most damage. It can only be used when summoned simultaneously with his other half, Rakshasi.

• Knowledge of Survival

[Acquired skills]

• Highest-level dependent body: A temporary body invoked by a skill. Has no acquired skills and does not grow. A high-level dependent body possesses an ego comparable to the original and twice the initial combat power, and can also share one of the summoner's acquired skills.

• Breakthrough of Limits

[Race] Rakshasi

[Combat Power] 3400(MAX!)

[Inborn Skills]

• Walker of the Asura Path: Residents of the Path of Asura, who spend their days in battles that never end.

It can only be used when summoned simultaneously with her other half, Rakshasa.

• Self-regeneration

[Acquired skills]

• Highest-level dependent body: A temporary body invoked by a skill. Has no acquired skills and does not grow. A high-level dependent body possesses an ego comparable to the original and twice the initial combat power, and can also share one of the summoner's acquired skills.

• Breakthrough of Limits

The subordinates produced by Kishimojin have a skill called [Highest-level dependent body], which allowed them to share the original's growth limit combat power and one of their parent's acquired skills.

The skill to be shared was, of course, [Breakthrough of Limits].

A group of Rakshasa and Rakshasi, with a combat power of over 3,000, emerged from the cracks in space with birth cries.

Outnumbered at once, Nemain summoned new subordinates, but they were utterly outmatched.

The combined combat power of Nemain's summoned subordinates was over 5,000: Banshee (760 x 2) + Dullahan (800 ÷ 2) + Nemain (1600 x 2); while Morrigan and the rest had over 6,000. However, due to the overwhelming numbers and the self-destructive nature of the Rakshasa and Rakshasi, their life force quickly dwindled.

Convinced of victory at this sight, I was about to use Fate Manipulation while I still had the chance, when I suddenly realized,

Ah, Oi ! Can you use Kisshouten's power in your current form?!

Oh, …that's no good!

 Renge hurriedly undid her transformation.

Kishimojin disappeared from the scene, as did her subordinates, the Rakshasas and Rakshasis.

However, the three sisters had already been fatally wounded, and their life force was on the verge of depletion.

At the very last moment, I managed to pull out the Hope Diamond and invoke Fate Manipulation.

According to the principle, 14 Garnets should be needed for a definite drop, but since there was no time to adjust the number, I used slightly more than 20 Garnets and threw them in all at once.

 The result was————

T- that was a close call...

Phew, that was a close one!

Where the three sisters had been, there were now three cards.

I plopped down, limp and weak.

If I had failed the drop on this one, it would have been no joke...

Mea and the others brought the cards of the three sisters to me as I was feeling weak.

I took them and checked their stats.

• Poisonous Woman8: The origin of the Banshees and Dullahans, who are omens of death. An advanced class equipping skill. So Nemain is the only one who copied [Breakthrough of Limits]. And, as I suspected, Kokuanten wasn't eligible for copying.

Well, it can't be helped. If the other cards had also copied [Breakthrough of Limits], we wouldn't have won so easily, and even as it is, the skills are quite good… Though, [Pride of Deity] is a bit of a concern.

While I was checking the cards, Mea and the others started chatting excitedly with me,

"Renge's new skill is insane, isn't it?! Being able to not only kill subordinates but also summon them is just unfair, right?!"

"It's amazing. I was actually a little bit scared."

Kishimojin's skill was definitely a bit frightening.

It was more like witnessing the savage side of deities.

So that was a top B-rank skill... almost an A-rank skill, huh...

"Huh? Renge, you seem a bit unwell."

 Then, Mea noticed Renge's condition.

Certainly, normally she would be all puffed up here, boasting in front of Mea.

Ah... I'm a bit tired. It's really hard when your spiritual level changes at the beginning."

“Aa- I can relate. The first time I used the [Spiritual recurrence], it was hard for me too."

I see, so the transformation into Kishimojin drains her spiritual energy, just like [Spiritual recurrence].

That means her transformation probably doesn't last very long, especially while she's still getting used to it.

When Renge just learned the [Spiritual recurrence], her transformation time was also short, and then it gradually increased to the maximum of one hour.

Oh, speaking of [Spiritual recurrence]...

"Myra, you did a great job today."

"Yes! I am honored!"

The Basilisk's poison forced the opponent to play their trump card early.

While we could have achieved the same result with Renge's Kokuanten, it was strategically significant that we could force our opponent to reveal their hand without using a limited-use skill.

 Myra had been consistently excellent.

Since learning the four types of [Spiritual recurrence], she had been exceptionally active, as if compensating for past frustrations, showcasing a level of performance that exceeded all expectations.

From tanking to buffing, debuffing, scouting, and mobility, Myra was now becoming the next most versatile all-rounder after Eliza.

However, there seemed to be someone who was jealous of Myra's active role...

Mugghuggh...... isn't that a little strange? Why is this recently powered-up fellow playing a bigger role than I, who just got a new weapon?

Suzuka sent a resentful look at Myra through the Card Gear's vision.

 Everyone looked at her.

"...What are you talking about, Suzuka? You've been playing an important role in our usual dungeon attacks."

In fact, during our usual dungeon explorations, Suzuka, wielding the Daitōren, absolutely dominated the dungeon monsters.

The Daitōren was an excellent magic item that granted its user the unique skill of divine power.

These include Psychokinesis for unconventional combat, Heavenly Ears to pick up sounds throughout the area, Perception of Evil Intent (Other Mind Power) to detect malice and prevent surprise attacks, Psychometry to recognize traps, and the ability to inflict damage on spirit monsters... These skills alone provide her with most of the abilities necessary to conquer a dungeon.

Empowered by the Daitōren, Suzuka was effortlessly defeating C-rank enemies, making them seem like insignificant prey.

Due to her remarkable performance, she had earned the respect of her comrades and had even been given the nicknames 'Suzuka the Sweeper' and 'The Unstoppable Monster Slayer Suzuka.'

Moreover, considering how much we've accommodated her jealousy by making the Daitōren practically exclusive to her use... I wondered what she's complaining about.

As we tilted our heads in confusion, Suzuka said with a frustrated look on her face,

That's right! But somehow, I feel like I'm not being depicted enough! It feels like my moments of glory are being completely cut out, Master!

Good grief... I wondered what she was going to say.

"What nonsense are you saying... This isn't a manga or a light novel, you know? Right? Renge?"

I turned to Renge, seeking her agreement, but contrary to my expectations, she was giving Suzuka a sympathetic look.

"...Don't worry. I think, probably, there will be a boost soon."

…Really? I'll believe you, you little brat.

"Since Dress and Myra got boosts, you're probably next in line, considering the cycle."

...What on earth are you talking about?

Oh oh, I need to collect the Disappointment Box now.

Well, I doubt anything good besides the conquer reward is inside anyway.

Thinking like that, I opened the Disappointment Box...

"Oh...!?"

Surprisingly, there was a rare bite in the Disappointment Box.

" This is...?"

A short spear... I guess?

It was about one meter long. Its tip was fashioned into a simple knife-like blade, while the shaft was intricately carved with images of leaves, a wolf, a horse, and a snake, seamlessly interwoven.

I initially judged it to be a spear because of the pointed tip, but upon closer inspection, it had a unique construction, gradually thickening towards the opposite end, and the section where the bottom should have been was a hollow... or rather, shaped like some kind of vessel.

Hmm, isn't this a staff rather than a spear?

"Ah, a staff, huh."

I see, that makes more sense.

The design features a wolf, a horse, a snake, and... aconite? That's quite a combination.

"Mmm, I wonder what this item is derived from."

Well... it feels like it might be from a deity symbolizing magic or death.

While Athena and I were discussing the staff, I noticed Mea, who usually doesn't get involved in these kinds of discussions, had come closer and was peering at the staff.

"...What's wrong, Mea? Did you notice something?"

"Ah, Master. I think, maybe, this... might be my key item?"

"Really?!"

To think that Mea also had another [Spiritual recurrence]...

How fortunate to get it at this moment—no, wait!

I rushed to check the number of Garnets used.

There's no way such good fortune could happen by chance! If it wasn't a coincidence, then...!

I looked into the pouch on my waist, and there they were: all the Garnets were shattered.

As I thought, the excess good luck from using too many Garnets had gone to the Disappointment Box...

…No, that's also strange.

Just like how using the Hope Diamond prevents the Garnets from shattering, any excess good luck would remain unused.

If it were Luck Manipulation, that's one thing... But with Fate Manipulation, which can control all good luck energy, the excess doesn't automatically flow somewhere else.

That's why I boldly threw in all the Garnets I had.

Yet, all the Garnets shattered, which means...

“It was used.”

The will residing within Renge automatically allocated that amount of good luck to the drop.

Why Mea's key item...? Does that mean I'll need it from now on?

Or...... did they try to get something else and failed?

Eh... that's the boost?!

While I was lost in thought, Suzuka's somewhat askew remark echoed through the shrine grounds.

[TIPS] Multiple Spiritual Recurrence

Cards with two or more [Spiritual recurrence] can maintain their transformed state for a longer duration and switch between different forms within that time.

The relationship between the transformation time of [Spiritual recurrence] and its 'charging' is similar to the special move/attack gauge in fighting games.

Unlike individuals with a single [Spiritual recurrence] ability, those with multiple [Spiritual recurrence] have multiple 'transformation gauges'.  Although they can transform as long as a single gauge is full, the time required to fill each gauge is the same (if it takes one day to fill a single gauge, it would take Myra four days to fill all four), and they cannot select only one gauge and leave the remaining three (once they transform, they use all the gauges).

Notes:

1 tatami mat is about 0.9 x 1.8 metres (3 x 6 ft), depending on the region

it's a territory/zone-based skill. It especially strengthens cards with divine attributes.

They are Nemain’s summoned subordinates

Rakshasa (male) and Rakshasi (female) are types of demons or ogres in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, typically depicted as fierce, cannibalistic creatures who prey on humans, often children. Kishimojin herself was originally a Rakshasi.

Asuras are often depicted as powerful beings, similar to gods, but they are characterized by jealousy, envy, and a constant struggle for power and dominance

ネヴァン in the raw, which could be read as Nevan. But we only found ‘Nemain’ as a goddess mentioned in Irish mythology

In the Irish mythology, Nemain is the goddess who personifies the frenzied havoc of war rather than death and victory.

While Nemain is associated with death and omens, the idea of her being the 'origin' of Banshees and Dullahans seems to be fictional. In Irish mythology, Banshees and Dullahans have their own distinct origins and lore, separate from her.

Morrigan is a war goddess in Irish mythology, and while she is definitely associated with both 'domination' and 'slaughter', this title of 'Goddess of Domination and Slaughter' is actually not mentioned in the mythology.

10  In the raw, it is actually ヴァハ (Vaha), but we found Badb as the closer name among the Irish goddesses

11  In Irish mythology, Badb is often associated with war, death, and destruction, but not specifically a goddess of wrath.

12  This specific story does not actually fit Badb of the Irish mythology.

13  狂乱 (Kyōran), more intense and chaotic than insanity (狂化 = Kyōka), so we translated it as ‘raving madness’
