[WN] Hidden Reincarnated Hero : Chapter 7

007 Choosing Equipment

"Can you tell me about the dungeon?"

After breakfast on the fourth day of my reincarnation, I asked Anneliese about the dungeon.

"Dungeons are dangerous."

"I know that. Beyond that, I want advice on preparations and what to expect, so I don't die in there. Just so you know, I know absolutely nothing about dungeons. Advise me with that in mind."

Anneliese nodded and thought for a moment.

"You should grasp the characteristics of the dungeon and its monsters beforehand."

"Tell me that information."

"It would be better to read the documents available at the Explorer's Guild than to ask me."

"Understood. Anything else?"

"Detecting traps."

"How?"

"Bringing a scout-type job is best."

"I'm planning to enter the dungeon alone, so tell me countermeasures based on that."

"I will go with you."

"No, that's..."

Exploring a dungeon while carrying Anneliese, what kind of penance would that be?

"It's fine. I'm strong, and I can detect traps."

Even if you say that...

"Alright then, tell me how to detect and disarm traps."

"It's magic, so it would be impossible for you, Master."

So, she detects and disarms traps with magic. Among my jobs, only Reincarnated Hero can use magic... And it doesn't have any trap-related magic.

Anneliese was stubborn. I'd heard that people get stubborn when they get old, and it was true. I braced myself for the worst, even carrying her if necessary, and decided to take Anneliese with me.

As Anneliese suggested, I proceeded with preparations for entering the dungeon.

Bring spare weapons and armor. If my fighting style is tough on weapons and armor, I'd need spares. Bring more water and food than planned, just in case. If camping out, a thick blanket is essential.

The food and water were incredibly heavy. So, I threw it all into the Item Box. Fortunately, now that the Item Box was (Low), it had 40 slots, so everything fit.

Even if it didn't fit, if I packed multiple items into one cloth bag, it would only take up one Item Box slot. This isn't a cheat, but it's convenient.

"Item Box...? Master, are you a Carrier?"

Was she really that surprised?

"No, I'm a Villager. Level 1."

"A Level 1 Villager?... So you have the unique skill Item Box."

Anneliese made a subtle expression. What was it? Was a Villager that rare? Or were unique skill holders that scarce?

"What's wrong?"

"Unique skill holders are extremely rare. I've heard that in this large city of Kerniff, there are only a few, if any."

Golteo-san said Kerniff had a population of about 200,000. A few out of 200,000 is a small number, but isn't it not that rare when considering the entire world?

"Maybe it's best not to let it be known?"

For now, I hadn't shown it to anyone besides Anneliese. My light novel (bible) taught me that.

"Unique skills are more effective than normal skills, and the Item Box unique skill has double the storage capacity of a Carrier's. It's a skill envied by nobles, merchants, and especially explorers who carry large amounts of luggage."

Being able to move around empty-handed thanks to the Item Box is certainly a big advantage.

"Carriers do exist, but their numbers aren't that high. Carriers don't gain levels in combat, but they are particularly valued by explorers. You might even be kidnapped and enslaved."

Kidnapped, that's bad.

"I see... so it's better not to use it in front of others."

"Yes."

Just being able to hear such common sense made buying Anneliese worthwhile. I hope she gives me as much knowledge as possible before her short lifespan ends.

And I'll keep the Detailed Appraisal to myself. I have a feeling that letting others know about it would be quite dangerous. If you ask me why, I can only say I have a hunch.

"Also..."

"Hm? What is it? Don't hesitate to say it."

"A Level 1 Villager is very rare."

"Eh?"

"Villagers gain levels no matter what they do. Your age at Level 1 indicates that you haven't done anything so far. This is very strange."

"I-I see..."

That was a blind spot. It seems it would be fine if I set it to Traveler, so I'll change it.

"Speaking of which, does Anneliese also need to register as an explorer?"

"Slave registration is not required. Only you, Master, need to register."

So, I decided to register as an explorer alone.

Anneliese wears a rough slave collar around her neck, which apparently identifies her as a slave.

Putting a collar on an old woman like this, in Japan, we'd probably be reported for elder abuse.

"Did you become a Mage by using a grimoire, Anneliese?"

"Yes."

"Did you get the grimoire in a dungeon? Or did you buy it?"

"I found it in a dungeon. Grimoires rarely drop from monsters in dungeons, so I must have been lucky."

The probability of a monster dropping one is 1 in 10,000, so that's a very low probability. Moreover, defeating 10,000 monsters isn't something one person does. Many explorers enter the dungeon every day, so all of them have a chance.

After hearing her story, I took Anneliese and headed to the Explorer's Guild.

I appraised the people passing by in town, checking their jobs.

Detailed Appraisal Results

Swordsman: One who wields a sword. Can use the Slash (Minor) and Evade (Minor) skills. Acquisition condition: Perform 100 sets of 100 continuous full-power swings. Or defeat 100 monsters with a sword.

Lancer: One who wields a spear. Can use the Triple Thrust (Minor) and Downward Strike (Minor) skills. Acquisition condition: Perform 100 sets of 100 continuous full-power thrusts. Or defeat 100 monsters with a spear.

Priest: One who serves a god. Can use the Prayer (Minor) skill. Acquisition condition: Continue praying for 500 days. Or defeat 100 monsters with bare hands.

Knight: One who protects comrades. Can use the Provoke (Minor) and Shield Attack (Minor) skills. Acquisition condition: Receive 1,000 attacks with a shield.

Monster Tamer: One who tames monsters. Can use the Tame (Minor) and Monster Enhancement (Minor) skills. Acquisition condition: Fight monsters 1-on-1 and win 100 times.

While walking, I checked the main combat-oriented jobs.

Swordsman seems doable, but since I don't actually know the strength of monsters, I'll just have to try it and see.

"Come to think of it, I need to buy Anneliese's weapon and armor. And clothes too."

"For a weapon, a staff. For armor, a robe. I'd like a dress for clothes."

Anneliese asserted herself properly. However, she walked very slowly. While I walked 10 meters, Anneliese could only walk about 5 meters. It couldn't be helped since she was old, but it made me worried about the future.

Matching Anneliese's walking speed, we went around to the clothing store, weapon shop, and armor shop.

At the clothing store, Anneliese chose clothes, underwear, and socks in less than 10 minutes, but at the weapon shop, she planted herself in front of the staffs and didn't move. I panicked for a moment, thinking she had died like a battery running out, but she was just deep in thought choosing a staff.

"What are you thinking so hard about?"

"I was choosing one that felt right in my hand."

She hasn't even held it. How would she know if it felt right?

Mage's Staff A: MATK+4 Durability 13/13

Mage's Staff B: MATK+5 Durability 13/13

Mage's Staff C: MATK+5 INT+1 Durability 14/14

Mage's Staff D: MATK+3 Durability 12/12

Mage's Staff E: MATK+4 MIN+1 Durability 13/13

"I'll take this one."

Anneliese chose the Mage's Staff C.

"Why did you choose that one?"

"The staff was calling to me."

Is Anneliese some kind of weird person?

"How about this one?"

I intentionally suggested Mage's Staff D, which had lower effects, but she shook her head.

"That one's assertion is weak."

It seemed she was a genius type who could intuitively understand the quality of staffs.

At the armor shop, it took her just as long to choose a robe.

Still, she picked the best one out of several options.

Anneliese's status didn't show any appraisal or discerning skills for checking the quality of items. It must have been some kind of intuition from long experience.

Mage's Robe: MDEF+3 MIN+1 Durability 10/10

Since Anneliese was a Mage, a robe was apparently the best body equipment.

And the weapons and armor I had looked like this:

Iron One-Handed Sword: ATK+10 STR+2 Durability 31/31

Steel One-Handed Sword: ATK+15 STR+3 Durability 45/45

Mithril Two-Handed Sword: ATK+35 STR+7 DEX+6 Slashing Enhancement (Low) Auto-Repair (Low) Durability 85/85

Iron Shield: DEF+10 VIT+2 Durability 30/30

Steel Shield: DEF+15 VIT+3 Durability 47/47

Iron Breastplate: DEF+10 VIT+2 Durability 31/31

Steel Breastplate: DEF+15 VIT+3 Durability 46/46

Looking at the status screen, I could see each ability score. Since the ability displays were familiar from games, I could accept them without confusion.

HP = Life Force (Hit Point)

MP = Magic Power (Magic Point)

STR = Strength

VIT = Vitality

AGI = Agility

INT = Intelligence

MIN = Mind

DEX = Dexterity

ATK = Attack

DEF = Defense

MATK = Magic Attack

MDEF = Magic Defense

These abilities seemed to increase proportionally with level, but it's common knowledge in games that the rate of increase differs depending on the job. Also, there should be abilities that are easier or harder to increase depending on the race, but I wonder what the system is like in this world.

My abilities looked like this:

My job was Traveler. Detailed Appraisal told me that Traveler, Cook, Merchant, and Carrier do not gain levels in combat. Avenger and Reincarnated Hero gain levels in combat, but I have no intention of setting them. The only remaining option was Villager, but Anneliese pointed out that a Level 1 Villager was strange. So I kept it as Traveler.

If my Villager level was around 4, I would have made it Villager.

Also, it seems a Level 7 Villager and a Level 1 Swordsman have roughly the same strength. This is assuming the Swordsman doesn't use skills; if they do, the Swordsman would overwhelmingly win. A Villager is that weak, but Detailed Appraisal told me that because they grow no matter what they do, their growth rate is fast.

Job Traveler Lv1

Race Human

Abilities

HP = 30

MP = 30

STR = 5

VIT = 5

AGI = 5

INT = 5

MIN = 5

DEX = 5

ATK = 15

DEF = 15

MATK = 15

MDEF = 15

STP = 0

When I change jobs, my ability scores also change. In particular, the scores for the two "landmine" jobs increase quite a bit, but I don't intend to set them. Also, when I equip weapons and armor, the display includes the correction values.

Furthermore, my ability screen has an item called STP. This is short for Status Points, and it seems I gain points when I level up.

In addition to growth from job level-ups, it seems I can freely allocate Status Points.

And last night, I could see Anneliese's status screen from my own status screen. A slave's status screen seems to be linked to their master's.

These are Anneliese's abilities:

Job Mage Lv21

Race Half-Elf

Abilities

HP = 96

MP = 126

STR = 13

VIT = 12

AGI = 19

INT = 22

MIN = 20

DEX = 18

ATK = 39

DEF = 36

MATK = 66

MDEF = 60

Being a high level, Anneliese is strong. Her stats are strong enough that I might die if she just punched me, but her walking speed is half of mine. Do status values not relate to such things?

Furthermore, Anneliese had no STP (Status Points). Not "zero," but "none."

I don't quite understand it, but even when I used Detailed Appraisal on people walking around town, they didn't have STP. Is this a perk only for me, or do my summoned classmates also have it, or do people with STP appear very rarely?

Detailed Appraisal didn't tell me that much.
