Chapter 54
Unexpected Shortcomings
Translator : PolterGlast
I never encountered it
when I stopped, but as I walked within minutes I heard a noise.
(Alright, over there!)
I didn't intend to
have an encounter battle, so I ran while being careful to make as little
footstep noise as possible.
Then, I hid behind a
large rock that I had marked when I checked the surroundings in advance, and
activated Shadow Dive.
This dark magic, which
allows me to sink my body into the shadows, allows me to hide anywhere there
are shadows.
And I can see outside
even from inside the shadows.
I decided to continue
peeking, being careful not to let my face show.
The width of the cave
is quite large, with enough space for the vanguard to attack from the left and
right.
A slight shadow falls
on such a wide road.
Due to the light, the
shadow grew longer and longer, and the shadow of the robe became as large as a
monster.
If it gets that big, I
might even be able to get into the shadow of the Elder Lich.
I hear a hard sound of
teeth hitting each other every time I walk, clattering.
After a moment of
tension, a figure came into view.
"..."
It's definitely an
Elder Lich.
What it holds in its
hand is... a red jewel.
Does that mean he's a
fire magic user?
I was about to use the
door installation power, and then I wondered.
What happens if I
install a door while in the shadows with Shadow Dive?
When I actually tried
it... it turned out that the door could not be installed.
In other words, if
it's discovered that I'm in the shadows with Shadow Dive... I'd be in a pinch.
I thought it would be
convenient for sneaking, but when it comes to escaping, it seems better to use
[Home] than to use it poorly.
Even while I was
thinking, "Please don't notice me...", the Elder Lich didn't stop
walking.
Compared to the Grim
Reaper, Null Zombies, Sorcery Wraiths, and other undead that have appeared so
far, the Elder Lich is much slower.
The speed is no
different from walking normally.
Is that slow pace a
sign of confidence?
The Elder Lich
continued to walk as it was... and disappeared from view without noticing me.
Phew... it seems that
their perception ability is not that great.
I guess the only one I
should be careful about is the Wind Elder Lich after all...
After that, I
continued to explore, making a map while walking slowly, and hiding behind the
rocks when I noticed them approaching.
I changed my method to
hiding behind the rocks and observing the situation because I couldn't escape
to my home when Shadow Dive was discovered (by the way, even with this, the Elder
Lich didn't notice me).
Although there were
many holes in the map shown to me by Varietta-san, I was able to complete the
map by drawing additional layers to some extent.
I encountered many
Elder Liches along the way, but in the end, not a single one noticed me.
Among them was the
Wind Elder Lich wielding a green jewel staff, but it didn't seem to notice me.
It seems that the Wind
Elder Lich can't use Wind Search.
I'm relieved that I
was able to avoid a situation where I had to play tag with it.
They all walk with a
swaying, unsteady gait, but the pressure emanating from their bodies is still
overwhelming.
Come to think of it, I
felt something similar when I saw the Lich before... maybe it's the effect of
some kind of skill.
Alright, I'm starting
to calm down a lot.
It seems I'm starting
to have enough composure to think calmly.
This tenth level is
much wider than the previous floors, and despite this, the number of
individuals is quite small.
Therefore, encounters
occur only about once every ten minutes or so.
Apparently, I was
quite lucky that I didn't encounter anyone even after standing still for about
20 minutes.
The Elder Liches
basically wander around in circles on the same route.
I had assumed that
since they could use magic, they must be intelligent, but their movements were
quite inorganic, or rather, quite mechanical.
And just as I had
expected, the Elder Liches apparently has an attribute they are good at.
The jewels embedded in
the staffs they hold were different colors for each individual.
I confirmed five
colors: red, green, yellow, blue, and purple.
Probably fire, wind,
earth, water, and darkness, respectively.
There may be other
types.
I want those staff...
it's something that Elder Liches, who looks so strong, carries, so it's
probably quite powerful.
After continuing to
observe while mapping for a while.
It seems that I can't
get any more information about the Elder Lich just by looking at them.
Alright, then next,
finally... I'll challenge the Elder Lich.
