Teigun
Development Project ①: Land
Reclamation/Preparation Work

"I'm counting on
you to handle the town's development and the mine's management."
"Please take care
of yourself. And make sure to show your face around here too, okay?"
"Since we'll be
going there for training every month, I'm counting on you for the garrison
facilities."
"Brother, please
take me with you next time!"
"Anne, please
take good care of Takuhir-sama."
As signs of spring
began to appear, I could no longer contain my impatience. I was seen off by
Father, Mother, my elder brother (Darek), my younger sister (Chrisia), and the
steward (Raymond), and set off for the town of Teigun with Anne.
When I arrived in
Teigun and saw the construction underway everywhere, I was filled with deep
emotion.
Finally, I had
arrived!
No, finally, I was at
the starting line!
Soon, the third wave
of prospective immigrants and seasonal workers would arrive. This was just the
beginning!

The Teigun settlement
was located on the only gently sloping western side of the steep Mount Teigun,
nestled between sheer cliffs and steep valleys, spreading out in a fan shape.
At the apex of the
triangular gentle slope was an abundant spring, and the town of Teigun was
being built there.
<Town Layout
Cross-Section>
The town was built by
cutting into the gentle slope, forming four levels. Except for the third
section, each section was leveled by cutting into the slope. The third section
remained a gentle slope.
<First Section>
Length: 200 m
Width: 1000 m
The first section,
located at the highest point of the town, was the lord's exclusive area.
In the center was the
(under construction) 200 m square area surrounded by a dry moat and a partition
wall, where the lord's mansion branch was located.
Officially, I was the
lord, but not an independent lord, so the lord's mansion was called the branch
of the family's main residence in the town of Est.
To the left and right
of the lord's mansion branch were two agricultural experiment fields, each
approximately 200 m square.
<Second Section>
To maintain the level,
there was a step between the first and second sections, and the second section
spread out below this step.
Length: 200 m
Width: 1000 m
A garrison, barracks,
and training grounds were planned to be built in the center. This large
rectangular area had ample space for a large number of soldiers to be stationed
in the future.
<Third Section>
Although gentle, the
third section was built on a slope, so there was also a step at the boundary
between the second and third sections.
Length: 800 m
Width: 1000 m
The large third
section was a gently sloping downhill area, but was deliberately not leveled.
Seen from a distance, it looked like gentle steps.
This third section was
the center of the town of Teigun, containing the residents' living area, a
commercial area with shops, restaurants, and accommodations, and an industrial
area with workshops, blacksmiths, and warehouses.
The planned layout was
to have the government office and the (publicly operated) commodity exchange
located in the center of the third section, flanking a circular central plaza.
Passing through the
central plaza and along the main street leading to the main gate was the
commercial area on both sides, followed by the craftsman's district with
workshops and blacksmiths, the area with inns and restaurants one street
further out, and then the residents' living area further out from the main
street.
The north side of the
central street passing through the central plaza was called the North District,
and the south side was called the South District. All publicly operated rental
housing was planned to be built in the South District.
Currently, the third
section was still mostly empty, but the allocation of land was being carried
out by Miseri-san of the government office.
The most lively area
right now was the open-air market spreading out in a circle along the central
plaza, with numerous stalls selling food, luxury goods, and decorations lined
up tightly.
The commodity exchange
was currently operated publicly to stabilize prices, and food and daily
necessities were procured and sold via the town of Fran.
Eventually, once the
roads were developed, food self-sufficiency was achieved, and distribution
stabilized, it was planned to entrust everything except some food items to
merchants and transform the exchange into storage warehouses, including a
community granary.
<Fourth Section>
One level below the
third section was the flatly developed fourth section.
The step with the
third section was planned to become a partition wall in the future.
Length: 200 m
Width: 1000 m
This section was for
residents other than those wishing to settle permanently. On the south side
were temporary housing for temporary workers, such as construction laborers,
and temporary accommodation for those who had just immigrated.
On the north side,
barracks and training grounds for the mercenary corps were planned to be built.
The fourth section was
directly connected to the main gate and was the first place visitors to the
town of Teigun would set foot in.
Therefore, a security
guard station and a large reception office were also established. The work at
the reception office was multifaceted and extremely busy.
In addition to window
services such as registering and assisting immigrants and temporary workers,
arranging jobs, allocating housing, registering and issuing permits to those
entering and leaving the Demon Realm, and registering for the shooting range,
they also posted information on purchased materials and bought catalysts
obtained from monsters.
"This is
basically an adventurer's guild, isn't it?" I, who established it, later
chuckled to myself.
There was a reason for
registering and permitting entry and exit to the Demon Realm. With the rapid
increase in people coming and going, there was a high possibility that some
would enter the Demon Realm out of curiosity.
Such amateurs would
either become prey for monsters or, if injured and fleeing back, could very
well lure monsters into Teigun.
Until now, Teigun was
a small place, not even worthy of being called a town. But now it was
overflowing with many people and livestock, and it was necessary to take
sufficient measures against monsters.
Except for hunters
such as experienced monster specialists, no permits would be issued without
prior registration and hiring the mercenary corps as guides and escorts.
And those without
permits could not pass through the checkpoints and enter the Demon Realm.
That was the general
outline of the town.
And one more thing.
Regarding the characteristics of the town of Teigun.
Several facilities
disproportionate to the town's size were planned to be built in this town.
A large orphanage like
the one in the town of Est
A school (with a
daycare center) attached to the orphanage
An infirmary larger
than the one in the town of Est
A church of the same
scale as the one in the town of Est
These were located at
the very top of the third section, bordering the second section.
The orphanage had
drawn older children and those who were somewhat literate from the orphanage in
the town of Est as a workforce.
A daycare center was
also established in the attached school, allowing women raising children to
entrust their children and work with peace of mind.
The infirmary was a
larger version of the infirmary in the town of Est and the existing temporary
aid station. Given the daily injuries in the adjacent mine and the developing
town, it was made spacious enough to handle them with ease.
Father looked a little
displeased, but I asked Mother to pull a considerable number of personnel from
the infirmary in the town of Est.
If things proceeded as
in the [previous history], the town of Teigun should be struck by an epidemic.
It was made excessively large to be able to respond on the front lines at that
time.
Regarding the outside
of the town, I paid attention to strengthening the defenses. Given its location
as the outermost frontier near the Demon Realm, being able to live safely was
an absolutely necessary element.
Usually, monsters that
attack people do not come out beyond the bamboo forest spreading at the border
of the Demon Realm. However, rarely, monsters do cross the bamboo forest and
come close to the areas where people live in search of prey, and during major
outbreaks that occur once every few decades, a large number of monsters can
flood in.
Furthermore, reckless
individuals who do not know the [Taboos of the Demon Realm] might bring
monsters with them.
Also, frontier lands
generally often lack the lord's oversight and can become bases for the
appearance of thieves or groups called bandit gangs.
A wall was needed to
protect the citizens from such threats.
<Defense
Facilities>
Outer
Perimeter Wall
- A 20 mel
high defensive wall surrounding the town's outer perimeter
- A partition
wall separating the third and fourth sections
- A 10 mel
high defensive wall surrounding the lord's mansion branch
Dry
Moat Installation
- Excavation
of a U-shaped dry moat surrounding the town, excluding the uppermost part
- Excavation
of a dry moat surrounding the lord's mansion branch
- The dry moat
was also envisioned for use as a reservoir
Currently, the town
walls were still in an embankment state like levees, and the dry moats were
just excavated and not yet completed, but rapid progress was planned.
The excavation of the
dry moat was carried out after surveying to avoid cutting underground water
veins, and care was taken to solidify the ground to prevent water leakage.
This dry moat was also
envisioned to store rainwater and snowmelt from the upper part of Mount Teigun
for use as agricultural water during dry seasons.
By utilizing the slope
of the flat area, water could be discharged through waterways to lower
elevation areas. Waterway construction as an emergency irrigation channel was
planned to begin once there was leeway.
Furthermore, based on
proposals from Elan and Christoph, two waterways other than the irrigation
channel were prioritized for construction.
These waterways
extended near the checkpoints at both ends and had a mechanism to rapidly push
water into the narrow passes outside the checkpoints.
Checkpoints
- Construction
of a checkpoint on the Demon Realm side
- Construction
of a checkpoint on the Fran side
Frankly, checkpoints
were very important, but the current situation was that we hadn't gotten around
to them yet. However, the Demon Realm side couldn't be left unattended, so
Christoph's initial proposal of building a temporary checkpoint in the narrowest
part of the pass was being implemented.
This location required
fewer construction points for the time being, allowing for a decent checkpoint
to be built quickly.
A full-fledged
checkpoint was planned to be built closer to the flatland, a more solid one,
after the town wall construction was completed.
On the Fran side, we
had prepared something at the level of a wooden fence checkpoint for the time
being, but this was also a temporary measure, with the lowest priority.
<Defense
Personnel>
Originally, a
considerable number of regular soldiers should have been stationed in the town
of Teigun, but thanks to the Twin-Headed Eagle Mercenary Corps fulfilling this
role, we were greatly helped.
Some of them accepted
requests from merchants for escort during transportation and also escorted
people entering the Demon Realm seeking valuable catalysts and aiming for a
fortune.
Therefore, the
mercenary corps' barracks and garrison were located just inside the main gate.
Now that I think about
it..., the Twin-Headed Eagle Mercenary Corps had increased its members again.
I think they had 50
members before, but they had increased to 80, riding the wave of the
development boom in the Teigun area.
The mercenary corps
garrison was initially planned for a size of 100 men, but I immediately changed
it to secure a size of 200 men.
Everywhere was under
construction, the sounds of construction and people's voices were constant, and
most of the town was still vacant land. However, in this state, the town of
Teigun, completely different from the [previous history], was slowly but surely
arranging its entire appearance.
Frankly, if
construction continued at the current pace, the 20,000 gold coins would still
be far from enough...
Parts that couldn't be
done immediately were decided to be progressed over time.
